So this is something I ask from time to time, just in case I’m missing something…plus I’m bored ;0
Anything big (like new DE or WM or even distro) doing something new and exciting that it would be worth folk’s while to check out?
It has seemed like it’s been a fairly flat year for innovations (could just be me).
Thanks for sharing!
Cosmic DE just had the first beta release. I’m going to check it out this weekend possibly.
I’ve been following it for more than a year. It’s been incrementally improved, but no longer ‘fresh’ news to me..but certainly a good point to bring up in the thread!
I am honestly interested in possibly moving my day to day to Cosmic soon….vs Plasma. I’m not sure I will, but I’m considering it ;0
Well right before they announced Cosmic I was a PopOS user. Loved the desktop. Then one day I said I need to try out KDE. I’ve always been a Gnome user. Instantly fell in love with KDE. So I’m not sure I will like Cosmic. It’s still “gnomish”. lol Gonna try it out anyways. Been waiting on a beta.
Get into bash scripting, Python, LLMs(if you have the gpu for it), all kinds of fun stuff to do with Linux!
Hah, really too old for self-improvement projects, the focus isn’t there any more.
More into spectator sports.
I’m 53. Never too old. I spend most of my spare time learning Python and making cool little scripts to do things. #nerdlife
Just checked out Cosmic in a VM the other day. Very impressed, much to like.
The launcher is particularly interesting.
But being beta, well, there are some little niggles for me like not automatically recognizing the screen resolution and also what seem to be some artifacts on the lower part of the screen.
Still, very curious to see where they want to take this going forward.
Perhaps install KDE Linux and start using/testing it? They need testers over there.
Sometimes I visit DistroWatch and click on the “Random Distribution” button:
It may (or may not) surprise you with “something new and exciting” for putting the fun back into your computing.
Hah, I think I know Distrowatch by memory..and oh yes, I’ve done this trick.
Test that your backups work? Nothing gets you blood pumping like breaking your computer!
https://distro.moe/ cute little discovery tool
I’m keeping an eye on Aeryn, Ikey, Solus, and even Strobl in the deep background–they, and an assorted cast, are quietly brewing up something. Nothing tangible yet but a partial Aeryn ISO but something’s quietly coming is what all the feelers indicate. Game-changing? Dunno.
Plus if you are bored revisit the magnificent Alpine. In 2022 I fell madly in love with it it’s become more refined but due to hardware mishaps I had to get rid of it. Perhaps the only true server with a desktop….bonus…see how long you survive in a 100% MUSL environment….it has limitations but I really dug them..
…smallest attack vector in Linux and likely more secure than parrot, arch, etc (but not an amnesiac of course).

Opensuse 16.0 was release lately.
I thought OpenSuse and Suse itself was EOL.
Yeah, I’ve kinda had my eye on them…but it’s still feeling pretty vaporous and not enough repository packages to make me want to spend quality time in their distro.
As for alpine, yeah, I ran it for about 2 years on my server and liked it…but it’s awful hard to live (again) without the AUR on the desktop. I got tired of manually building software and limited availability. For convenience sake, I’m on Arch now on the server side…because it’s got everything.
Hah, I guess I could get back heavily into HyprLand…as I mentioned on a post just a few minutes ago, it tends to be composed of many moving parts and frequently breaks dependencies. That would be exciting I guess..but also frustrating
AxOS (https://www.axos-project.com/) has intrigued me, if I had a spare computer I’d give it a go with the Sleex desktop.
Plasma KDE 6.5 is coming in the next few weeks. The schedule put it 21st of october. There are many fixes and noteworthy changes in this release.
