[SOLVED] Suspend is missing from Menu

When I hit the Super key the Menu is shown, then pressing the lowest icon in the bottom left corner Cancel, Restart, Shutdown are shown, there is no Suspend. How can I enable that?

My system info is under the Summary below.

I am hardly an expert on Cinnamon or Linux power management, but I’ll offer some ideas.

(Although not my primary computer, I do have one up-to-date installation of EndeavourOS Cinnamon on a 9-year-old computer, and I do see the Suspend button.)

You have a very powerful, modern system, so limited system resources and functionality are unlikely to be the cause of the problem.

What is the result of this command?

cat /sys/power/mem_sleep

On my system I see

s2idle [deep]

which, I think, means essentially the same thing as S3. In other words, I think, my BIOS has advertised to the OS that it supports the S3 power management mode, which includes support for these functionalities: Suspend (to RAM), Hibernate, and Hybrid Sleep.

What is the result of this command?

cat /etc/systemd/logind.conf | grep -i suspend

On my system I see

HandleSuspendKey=ignore
#HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=suspend
#SuspendKeyIgnoreInhibited=no

Nothing here prevents Suspend from being offered on my system.

I know nothing about TongFang motherboards, but I see in online screenshots that the TongFang BIOS may include a setting for “S3/Modern Standby Support.” If you change this setting and reboot, does the Suspend button appear?

I’m running Cinnamon and when I click on shutdown I get the choice of suspend.

@Granite
Try to enlarge your 512M swap partition or add a new 4GB swap and modify in fstab.

sleep should work… hibernate needs a resume setup with a bigger swap (thats only one way to set it up)

I don’t use hibernate because I was told it is bad for SSDs. Is that correct?

I get the same output.

The output I get is this:

#SleepOperation=suspend-then-hibernate suspend
#HandleSuspendKey=suspend
#HandleSuspendKeyLongPress=hibernate
#HandleLidSwitch=suspend
#HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=suspend
#SuspendKeyIgnoreInhibited=no

The Suspend issue arose after an update I did on Sunday. Yesterday I noticed changes in the global settings, incl. the Power management.

So, should I uncomment any or all of the these lines, except the one for hibernate? Hibernation is bad for SSDs, I was told.

I am not sure about this. On my keyboard the F1 key in combination with the Fn key could also invoke Suspend, but not anymore after the update. I loved this because it was easy and Suspend happened virtually instantaneously. I would like to have it back.

The update I did this past Sunday caused this issue and should not have any influence on the BIOS setting. So, I don’t know what will happen by changing that BIOS setting?

Has your Cinnamon gone through the latest update?

Just updated my Cinnamon and everything is showing up fine.

I’m fully updated and my shutdown screen looks like @thefrog with the Susoend in the menu.

OK you guys, you got me worried now. But … you also got me thinking, isn’t that amazing?

Seriously, I have been wondering: how is this possible on a modern, powerful laptop? I did a restart after the update on Sunday, which did not change anything. So, after your comments that all is fine after the update, I decided to take more drastic action and shutdown the machine, give it 15 secs and fire her up again. And that did the trick!!

Suspend is there again in the menu, and the special keyboard key (F1+Fn) works again.

Many thanks to you both, as well as to @joekamprad, @kwg, @eso.
