[SOLVED] Steam - "Failed to load steamui.so"

Hey, so I have used arch (normal, antergos, and Endeavour) before, but I’ve never come across this error. The fixes I’ve found (usually for other systems) don’t seem to work. I’ve tried removing steam folders and re-downloading the update package, but it’s the same thing failing each time.

I’ve spent most of the day troubleshooting this, trying with LSI, steam native, steam runtime, all of which fail.

When I run Steam from terminal (Tilix) I get the following:

[pekempy@linux ~]$ sudo rm -r .local/share/Steam
[pekempy@linux ~]$ sudo rm -r ~/.steam
[pekempy@linux ~]$ steam
Running Steam on endeavouros rolling 64-bit
STEAM_RUNTIME is enabled automatically

Failed to load steamui.so - dlerror(): steamui.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

If I click “OK” on the popup saying it failed to load steamui.so I get the below, which is a little more helpful:

Seems to be an issue with some of the .zip, I’ve had it say different zips each time.

Has anyone come across this? Is it an issue with the download update from steam itself?

Welcome @Pekempy to EndeavourOS

You could try to rename your ~/.steam to steam-old then start steam. It will suppose to repair your install…

Hi FLVAL,

Thank you, I love how easy it is to get set up compared to arch CLI install.

I did try that at one point, and doing the rm -r achieves the same result (and saves space with multiple “old” folders/removing those manually).

I also forgot to mention I installed Microsoft fonts as per arch wiki, still no luck :frowning:

Hey, thought I’d drop an update. Tried again today with the exact same process (remove both steam folders, re-launch steam) and it’s worked! Must have been an issue with Steam’s ubuntu image

Just went through this myself and think I worked out a good series of steps to fix it. I might make a separate “steps I took to deal with it posting”.
