Are they maybe in ~/.local/share/applications ?

Nope, they are not.

Then look in /usr/share/applications

They are not there either; in fact, there are no .desktop files in that folder.

Thet are all .desktop applications in that directory! You could have a look in the menu editor, which in Plasma is accessed by right clicking on the menu icon and selecting edit applications.

In the Accessories category there are 2 pinentries, each with a padlock icon. Right clicking and looking at the properties show this command for one, /usr/bin/pinentry-qt, and /usr/bin/pinentry-qt5 for the other.

Seems to me, as a layman, that those could be safely deleted: am I right?

Well, if you delete them, it just means you won’t be able to run them from the menu.

But would you agree it is likely those 2 pinentries are actually those 2 .desktop app menu entries that don’t launch anything anyway?

I have no idea. Are they in the same place?

If you mean in the same category, yes: Accessories. But their check box is not checked off.

You seem to have a different menu editor to me, so I guess you’re on a different desktop? Maybe that means they’re not displayed.

I am on Cinnamon.

I’m on Plasma, so basically, I’m guessing. In that vein, one last guess. Have a look through the Accessories category and see if any of them have .desktop as their display value.

None do, they are all displayed with their icons and app names, and their check boxes are all checked off.

Sorry, I’m out of ideas. Maybe someone actually running Cinnamon will have better luck.

Now that we know what is being discussed ..

$ pacman -Fl pinentry
[...]
pinentry usr/share/applications/org.gnupg.pinentry-qt.desktop
pinentry usr/share/applications/org.gnupg.pinentry-qt5.desktop
[...]

those would be them.

If you cant wrangle your cinnamon menu to hide these entries then you could hammer it by just deleting the files and then adding them to NoExtract of pacman.conf.

[ https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Pacman#Skip_files_from_being_installed_to_system ]

Yep, that’s the ones.

They are not shown in the main menu (under the Super key), they are only listed in the “Edit menu” list.

What is baffling me is that when I check in /usr/share/applications/ there is no org.gnupg.pinentry-qt.desktop nor org.gnupg.pinentry-qt.desktop.

I tried to remove them with sudo rm /usr/share/applications/org.gnupg.pinentry-qt.desktop: the terminal does not protest, but when I do pacman -Fl pinentry both files are still listed.

There are 2 issues here that got interwoven though they are not related.

The 1st issue is about the 2 .desktop entries. They disappeared after uninstalling the app that created them and rebooting my laptop.

The other issue is about the pinentries and that one has not been resolved. Since almost all of the discussion in this thread is about this issue, I have changed the title of this page.

I had assumed it was understood that of course the desktop entries would be removed along with the package - thus that the intention was to keep the package but remove the desktop files for whatever reason.

The title now reads ‘How to get rid of 2 pinentries in the apps menu’ - as this is stated to be different than the original desktop files .. what are these pinentries?

These?
But they are different than the package?
But I thought we were talking about the pinentry package - which would provide these /usr/bin/pinentry* files along with the previously mentioned desktop files.

So … maybe I’m confused, but is the situation that your applications menu still has *pinentry* listed? And with a padlock icon? And they still ‘point’ to /usr/bin/pinentry*? Do such files exist? Even though pinentry is not installed?

Possibly requisite pacman query;

pacman -Qs pinent
