I’ve tried installing Skype onto a new laptop
But, the camera doesn’t seem to want to play
I also installed cheese and that works fine.
I had installed skypeforlinux-bin. Should I install anything else?

was enough for a Lenovo S145 on a fresh Plasma
If you’re not forced to use Skype, look into Jitsi-Meet or Element.
I have had this installed for months with almost no issues.
Do you get any error messages, like when you go into Settings > Audio & Video?

Yes, but the package mentioned by the OP gets configured to work on Arch.
