By thick books maybe you are referring to the MOTOROLA M68000 User’s Manual?(https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/reference-manual/MC68000UM.pdf)? At any rate, there s no need to carry around thick books anymore. The days of slide rules, and thick books are a thing of the past. That is until the power goes out
