The SHR will take it down a bit too.

This is nice. . . . goes to show you how much ‘Microsoft’ has monopolized everything. I love the penguin, a nice change to Windbloze logo’s on everything.

Two weeks ago, we had power outages on 4 out of 5 days in a row. Ranging from 2 hours to 8 hours on the last day. Rumor has it that this was in conjunction with a wild fire about 10 miles from my house.

I got busy and started ordering some hardware so I could increase the amount of the battery run time. I purchased everything in the picture, although the green wire was replaced by an inline fuse holder.

Comparison of the replaced batteries with the new larger batteries.

The original batteries were rated at 9 Amp Hour. The new batteries are rated at 35 Amp Hour. 9 times 4 is 36 so almost 4 times the battery reserve.

The finished product.

I tried to buy a real battery box, but I couldn’t find one of the proper size. So I scrounged up the Rubbermaid storage container. The only thing left to do is put the lid on the “battery box” and put the batteries and the UPS on the floor under the first shelf in the utility room.

The connector and everything look pretty rugged and profesh, but what about the wooden divider? isn’t that a fire hazard? i guess plastic melts too, but somehow that wood piece in contact with the black connector made me look more careful at the whole setup. Also, what are you powering up with these? looks small-ish for a house-hold, so it can’t be emergency power. is it just for the PC?
Also, those wildfires sound terrifying, do you have a generator for powering the household?

You are correct, not the best choice but it is what I had laying around. If the batteries get hot enough to combust wood, one would already have a disaster in the making. However, your point is valid so I now intend to replace the separator with something more appropriate. I have been retired for 10 years, but I used to be an Electrical Designer for a large Engineering firm. So yes, not really a professional choice on my part. As was the “battery box”. I am still looking for a good battery box.

  1. The Comcast (ISP) cable modem / telephony / WiFi unit.
  2. Since I am at the end of the line for the cable, there is an inline amplifier that supports two Comcast cable boxes besides the cable modem.
  3. A router that Comcast supplied as part of the “Home Alarm system” .
  4. My Web server and LAN server, both of which are Raspberry Pi 4b’s.
  5. A 10 inch LCD screen for the servers.
  6. A Linksys router that has been flashed with VPN service support.
  7. A 24 port D-Link 1 GB switch.

A conservative guess is that the above can be supported for 3 hours or more. Which is fine as once the power has been out for 2 hours, I hook up my gasoline powered generator.

I also have 4 other unaltered UPS for the entertainment center, my wife’s computer, my computer, and the EndeavourOS development computers.

The killer was we were not home for the last 8 hour outage. When we got home, the power was still out but the UPS had given out and all the above had a hard shut down.

Perhaps an old PC tower case? It should have good ventilation, and electrical protection (if correctly grounded, up to 24V what you get from batteries should not be a problem, no?).

Stemming back to the flooded acid lead batteries, part of the reason for a battery box was to contain acid in case of a leak. With today’s sealed lead acid batteries the chances of something like that is rare, but the requirement is still there in most US codes.

The other big reason for a battery box is to prevent metallic objects from being dropped on the battery’s top and cause a short, and physical battery protection in general.

So, already managed to void the warranty since I removed the sticker and installing a heatsink, but just got this in. 4TB US75 PCIe 4x4 SSD. Going to be going in my EliteBook 845 G11 that should be shipping in another week and a half.

For those of us mechanically inclined and can follow directions, how about a “How to build this” so we lowly plebes can build on ourselves, please.

Got this to replace an SSD for an older PC and I got another one coming tomorrow to upgrade my Samsung 980 Pro at 74% health in my main PC.

I couldn’t resist, I got 3 boxes. Their Blueberry and Cinnamon are good too.
