SDDM stuck at login

SDDM refuses to log me in. Its logs show nothing out of the ordinary. Happened after an NVIDIA and KDE update.

It will freeze upon entering anything in, X or Wayland.

I use X11 but Wayland doesn’t work either.

Update: I can get a very hacky X session going by manually running startx, kwin, and plasmashell in another TTY.

It’s likely SDDM-related.

It needs more info.

It looks like a kWin crash, not SDDM. Several KDE packages were updated, so it may be some bug in one or more of them.

I would try a different kernel.

KWin works when called from my hacky X session, do you mean to use the fallback initramfs?

Not really, but you could try. I meant linux or linux-lts.

You are right, but it’s kwin that crashes, and no SDDM bad behavior in the logs. Maybe a combination of things make kwin to crash. I don’t know, just guessing, after your reported info :man_shrugging: .

Nope, linux gives the same issue.

@petsam I somehow fixed it.

Update: You only need to change to another TTY (Ctrl+Alt+F4, you can replace F4 with any function key besides F1 and F2) and remove the EndeavourOS SDDM configs.

sudo pacman -R eos-plasma-sddm-config

If you don’t want to remove that package, follow the instructions here: I'm running Plasma with sddm. After updating I can't login - #20 by Viera

If that doesn't work Remove SDDM and configs:
sudo pacman -R sddm sddm-kcm eos-plasma-sddm-config

Reinstall SDDM (not the configs):

sudo pacman -S sddm sddm-kcm

Re-enable SDDM and reboot

sudo systemctl enable sddm

SDDM will revert to its default LXQt-style look if you remove the package, but it actually works now.

So it was SDDM. I was right :smiling_imp:

Too soon for a victory. :joy:
SDDM has not been updated since March 6, 2024.
OTOH kwin and other packages have been updated today, yesterday or some days before.
Does it make sense?
Actually, sddm-kcm (kde utility) was also updated today (Oct 15)… :face_with_monocle:

or was it the endeavouros configs? :face_with_monocle:

I can confirm that removing only eos-plasma-sddm-config fixes it (as in, it disables the log in screen theme which at this point seems to be the issue), and reinstalling it triggers the bug again

From what I could read, this package installs two files, that look harmless, unless something has changed upstream.
Could you share your current config, to compare to eos files?

for Xconf in /etc/sddm.conf.d/*.conf /usr/share/sddm/themes/breeze/*.conf.user ; do echo -e "\n### $Xconf" ; cat "$Xconf"; done

If you don’t mind some testing, while in your KDE session:

  1. Confirm Plasma System Settings is not running (actually sddm-kcm)
  2. Install eos-plasma-sddm-config in a terminal
  3. (Optional) Check current config, with the above command
  4. Start System Settings => SDDM (how it is called) and modify some settings
  5. Log out KDE to test SDDM is working
  6. If SDDM is fine, reboot to check SDDM after boot.

Or do nothing and let EnOS devs to do their stuff :joy:

Yeah I also checked the repo, answered in the other thread at I'm running Plasma with sddm. After updating I can't login - #20 by Viera

Yes, I was just reading it
It seems it’s a Plasma/KDE change IMO. Edit: Probably sddm-kcm. I don’t have it installed. I bet the issue could be solved if sddm-kcm was removed.

IMHO EnOS should not interfere with KDE default settings (file kde_settings.conf), rather adding another drop-in file, as it is designed. That file is modified by sddm-kcm. I am not sure if sddm-kcm also reads all other config files, but it should.

Something is wrong in KDE-dev-land.
Having sddm start in X11 should not break KDE session in any way.
I am not on KDE to do a normal test, although I use SDDM (in X11) with no issues (bspwm). :man_shrugging:

So, I did a fresh install of Endeavour and after allowing it to update, I cannot log into KDE with an external monitor attached to my laptops HDMI port. I get this same issue. Removing that config file did allow me to bypass the issue, but this is happening now right after a fresh install.

Well a fresh install would add that package back, you should make a fresh post with your issue.

Following this thread I can confirm that manually editing that config file did the trick for me.
