Hi lads&gents,

at the moment I use Xsane for my brother printer DCPJ1200WE - multifunction devices scan function. Xsane is not bad and provides the necessary functions like multiproject and such, but I am interested what you use instead and what you prefer and why

I seldom use a scanner, but for my needs simple-scan is easy to use and good enough.

there’s a scanner made for my Epson scanner so I use it (epsonscan2).

brother has an exclusive scanner like this ^ but I can’t remember the name.

I’d stay with Xsane if you’re happy. It has a ton of features.

I’ve used Gscan2pdf which is effective but ugly as sin.

My own Epson app is as simple like simple-scan. Like @manuel, I value “easy to use and good enough.”

What Epson scanner do you have? I’ve never been able to get epsonscan2 to work on ANY Linux OS.
I have the Perfection V500 photo scanner.

I have a V39…epsonscan2 only services some models. I believe ImageScan (by Epson; in AUR) does the rest of the models or so research tells me.

for giggles I did this:

$ yay -Ss v500
aur/iscan-for-epson-v500-photo 2.30.4-4 (+4 0.00) [1728d8h]
All-in-one package from Epson : iscan + iscan-data + plugin for scanner Epson V500 Photo (also called GT-X770) - iscan[community] is out-of-date and buggy

maybe that will help either epson package?

Yep, I have it working with ImageScan which works well enough, just not all the bells and whistles of epsonscan2.

Tried everything on Epson’s site and the AUR to try and get epsonscan2 to work.

One of the commenters on the epsonscan2 AUR page pointed out that my scanner wasn’t supported by epson on Linux.

oh that sucks, I’'m sorry. I saw a couple linux/v500 [SOLVED] threads regarding scanner for yours (at Mint forums. etc) but did not read. Maybe imagescan was the cure.

Can pick grayscale/black and white/color. I have a pull down menu with resolutions from 200-500 as I recall. Can Letter/A4/envelope but I never tried it. It defaults to 8.5X11. Lot of stuff grayed out. Not rich in the bells and whistles dept.

There are a few AUR versions of brscanN where N is something like 2 to 5.

The brscanX packages are SANE drivers, I don’t believe there’s a GUI application with that. I use brscan5, and that’s the case for that one at least.

I’ve tried a few different scanning apps, and as dated as the interface looks, I still tend to go back to xsane for the level of control it offers.

Yes, contains no GUI app for the SANE driver.
Works with e.g. simple-scan and probably others too.

So xsane remains at the most complete App as I’ve assumed.

You should also check out Naps2. It’s a fairly small scanner app, but it’s still quite versatile and easy to use. You can find it in the AUR (naps2, naps2-bin).

Scanlite, scanpage, naps2 all work rather well on my 25 year old Hp6200C scanjet usb flatbed.

@shadow359 naps2 is especially useful when you run older devices, about 10 or more years old. I had looked into this once for a friend who had a pretty old HP scanner for which drivers were simply no longer available, and just recently we had a colleague here with a pretty old device as well ( Wie bekomme ich einen epson perfection 4490 Photo Scanner zum laufen? - #92 by LaGGGer ) —we’d already tried a few things in the thread—and it suddenly came back to me how it had helped my friend with her old device back then.—

It is and remains my favorite program when it comes to scanning, and it’s open-source freeware.
