RX 6900 XT VRR/FreeSync not Working

My setup is as follows:

  • B660M DS3H DDR4 motherboard
  • i5-12600K CPU
  • RX 6900 XT GPU
  • Single 144 Hz FreeSync monitor
  • 6.10.1-arch1-1 kernel
  • latest mesa and vulkan-radeon
  • X11 bspwm
  • FreeSync enabled in the monitor settings and in xorg.conf
  • Picom disabled with fullscreen games

When I launch VRRTest and change the target FPS, my monitor’s refresh rate stays at 144 Hz, indicated by its OSD. In an actual game, I can tell that the monitor is not displaying at a smooth 144 Hz. When I switch from a game to my desktop, there is a flickering issue as I move my mouse and doesn’t go away until I power cycle my monitor.

I’ve confirmed that none of these issues occur on Windows, so surely the GPU and monitor aren’t malfunctioning. I also didn’t experience these issues with my RX 5600 XT. Furthermore, I swapped back to that card after the last update to double-check.

Anyone else experiencing this issue or have ideas to debug it?

just deactivate freesync

I already disabled FreeSync on my monitor’s settings and disabled VariableRefresh in xorg.conf. Also, this article isn’t referring to dropping FreeSync support altogether. It refers to an experimental feature called FreeSync Video Mode, which creates display modes that are viable for video playback within the available FreeSync range. FreeSync should still work while in a full-screen game.
