[Resolved to not pursue] Very slow luks password entry

Problem: Way too slow (1 minute) between entering my luks passphrase and the disappearance of the screen and the grub boot menu.

What can I do to fix this?

I’ve had vanilla Arch and Fedora under luks on this laptop, and never had such a delay.

Also, I booted the Endeavour live media and was able to use cryptsetup to open the luks volume in but a second or so.

Thank you very much.

My system:
Thinkpad T450s i5 8GB ram, SSD.
Installed on BIOS
Endeavour fully updated Gnome DE

This is most likely due to the number of iterations. You want to reduce it.

That was my first thought. But note that I excluded that possibility. As noted initially:

Also, I booted the Endeavour live media and was able to use cryptsetup to open the luks volume in but a second or so.

Do you agree?

Did you install EOS with btrfs as fully encrypted installation?
If yes, your running into the problem, that grub is f…g slow in opening the encryption.

Especially here

Yes. I have the encrypted sytem congfiguration delivered with Endeavour.

While I’ve never suffered such a long delay in logins before on any distro, I’ve decided to live with it on EndeavourOS. It’s likely the security tradeoff of reducing iterations for grub to increase speed, is not worth it. For others, I discovered there are two Luks keyslots in use: 0,1.

Thanks for your very useful info and help.

All other installations I had before where not with an encrypted grub. The encrypted grub is the problem with the speed at boot up.

Please mark the post you see as solution for you.
Thanks.
