Please can you tell me and/or recommend some electron-free applications to work with for messaging related to Twitter and WhatsApp. That are resource efficient and open source.

In addition to what @ddnn provided, it’d be a good idea to wrap them into WebApps.
Linux Mint folks maintain a good tool to do that, it’s available in the AUR under the name: webapp-manager

Indeed. I use that for about half a dozen “apps”. EXCELLENT utility.
