Really weird bearenstein bear browser question

aur/midori-bin 11.4-1 (+2 0.00)
Browser fork of Floorp fork of Firefox by Astian
aur/midori 11.3.4-1 (+2 0.32) (Out-of-date: 2024-10-08)
    Web browser based on Floorp

Midori, while being fairly useless for 20 years, in no way resembled Floorp in any stretch of the imagination after having tried them both. I tried Midori twice in the last 6 months to see if it improved (nope was the answer). I’ve tried Floorp twice in the last 2 years.

They are not even cousins, or step cousins or related DNA…

In fact Floorp has not been around as long as Midori by a dam* sight.

Mandela effect?

Not sure what the point of this is. Vivaldi and Brave are based on Chromium, but they are night and day in visual similarity, and for Vivaldi the functionality too.

Remember that a fork doesn’t have to be the same thing, and in many cases, if it is, then it’s gonna die quickly because users will wonder why they should bother with the fork.

A good example are most of GIMP’s forks. Dead or dying, or just used to modify GIMP.

On a related note, visiting their website, the layout seems broken in Firefox. I better not see a properly functioning website when I open Brave. Otherwise, what the actual…?

HA! It’s not broken. It’s just poorly designed. Never mind.

that’s what I was afraid of.

No need for Mandela effects here.

Originally Midori browser was based on WebKitGTK. Then it switched to being based on Chromium around 2021. It looks like it started being based off of Floorp in 2023.

Apparently. Hey, at least they’re trying something different. Several times over now…

It’s a smart move. I used to be in love with the idea of those 3 old independents: eolie, midori, epiphany. but once you used them for any light lifting you realized they had tremendous limitations and yet they persisted. If Epiphany could just do normal stuff like load a page correctly or log in to an acct,I would have kept it, I loved it.

Yes you are right, Midori could have thrown in the towel. Floorp is at least interesting.
