Hi
I finally managed to install rcclone for proton drive, but now comes my question, how do I upload into proton drive folders ? I pretty new to this so I rather ask here. I did follow the whole guide from rcclone proton drive site ? but now whats next because I have given up installing the proton drive AUR I simply do not know how to ? so I installed the rcclone. but is this enough ? abit confused here ?
I donāt understand what you mean by āinstall rclone for proton driveā. I have a working setup, but Iām using restic
as an intermediary.
What does rclone listremotes
show?
Hi I follow their instructions and when finished install it seems to be ready for use, but how ? I am used to have a desktop app on macOS but from what I can understand there isnt any supported for Endeavour OS so my question how do I use proton drive ? how do you use Proton Drive ?
If youāre talking about a desktop app for Proton Drive
, it does not yet exist for Linux. Iāve using the Windows version, and it works well.
Now, since you mentioned rclone
, I need to know if youāve setup a protondrive
remote yet (hence the request for the output from rclone listremotes
). Can you also supply the link you used to setup rclone
?
Hi I will add it here
But I also found this link that seems to be a bit more useful because I only did the first part like in the link above
But when I follow the second link for some reason it do not work, even though I follow step by step phewww not easy to be a newbie, but I am learning lol
(2) things:
- Your second link is basically worthless. Thereās no reason to mount your
protondrive
as a share whenrclone
can sync your data without it. Plus this requires you to move any data you want backed up to the share;rclone
will sync any files/directories you want (think ofrsync
for cloud services). It also mentions settings up Hyprland services: are you using that? - I canāt help you without all of the information that I asked for. Either supply that or Iām moving on.
Hi
yes I use Enedeavour OS KDE hyprland and then I checked in Terminal proton drive exists. next question is rsync something I should install after I already create rclone ? I do not for now have any data in my Proton Drive so there is for now less work there. But I did inside Proton drive created folders like explained in second link. So now its more how do I proceed from here ? I have a proton unlimited plan so the Proton drive has 500 GB storage. My plan is to sync pictures folder and music documents and also the system backup think its called snapshots.
P:S Sorry if I did not provided enough information I will of course do that
OK - so if you have the ProtonDrive share mounted, then using something like rsync
will work fine. My earlier comments were suggesting to not create this share and just use rclone
directly (thatās really what itās for). Your next step should be to understand how rclone
works once a remote is created. rclone sync --help
will give you a ton of information.
Hereās an example of how I use rclone
:
rclone sync $HOME/Downloads proton:/Downloads --skip-links
This command sync my local Downloads directory with proton, ignoring any symlinks. This is a one-way sync, so your remote files will match your local ones (local files are not modified).
No idea what you mean by system backup
. Rclone does not create snapshots.
Hi ok I think I understand but basically its like using Proton Drive and upload directly into the different folders I made there ? or if I use Rclone and each time I make a backup in StandardNotes it will upload there ?
Yes.
Canāt answer that. All I know is that rclone
does not backup anything on the fly, like the ProtonDrive app does. I would recommend asking for help on rclone
here: https://forum.rclone.org/latest
Gotta say, this discussion taught me stuff. I had no idea rclone was out there. Thank you, I will be restructuring and avoiding use of the vendor provided appimage for PCloud, etc.
Always great to learn something new (and useful)!
Iāve used rclone
with OneDrive, Mega, and Proton; all with great success. Even if Proton ever finishes their promised app for Linux, Iāll most likely stick with rclone
.
Yeah, something to be said for āone tool to bind them allā
Hi I have come to the conclusion I will not use more time on it. So I canceled Filen and Proton drive too. And instead buying a external drive cheaper faster and safer lol. I been dealing with this since 7 this morning and its 16.36 now this is just driving me nuts to think about privacy and security based companies cannot provide a descent desktop client for Linux. Strange world we live in anyway its no big deal to me I save money in the end.
