HTOP for terminal, the included System Monitor for GUI.
htop normally and occasionally btop when I remember it
Honestly it’d still be windows task managers, all the ones I’ve found available for linux kinda suck by comparison to such an extent where I only use them when I’m in dire need.
The most user friendly one I found was some kde thing, forgot what it was called (system monitor? resource monitor?) but ultimately i didn’t like it because it wasn’t reliable (frequently found myself in a situation where processes were missing from it, which entirely defeats the whole point).
Honestly i wish I could just have a windows task manager clone, it’s a really good piece of software.
For the cli ones I kinda like nvtop most lately because of the gpu info.
https://missioncenter.io It’s not Windows task manager clone but it looks similar to me. Simple and just works. KDE one has too many configuration options.
missioncenter is beautiful and I want it!
edit: I tried it, it lives up to my hopes and dreams
So beautiful
Plasma’s System Monitor is my preferred choice.
These apps are there but i have no need to use them. I’m on EOS BTW and everything just works! Browsing processes is a waste of resources.
Yep, amazing when you run ‘top’ how ‘top’ is usually the highest CPU hog hahaha
Sometimes when your cpu is running particularly hard, or your memory usage is far higher than you expect it to be, it’s nice to be able to check these things.
And these CLI applications are just poorly suited to the task imo. I’m sure it’s fine once you’re used to them, but you have to actually take time to learn them (and on an individual basis too) to properly use them which is why I’ve been hoping for a GUI one and avoiding the CLI ones, but none of them were good enough for me until now.
I’ve mostly been relying on commands that grab the highest cpu or memory using processes via top to check these things whenever I need them, but having a gui application i can just keybind will be a lot more convenient.
Let me chime in on the side of the phenomenal tool btop
. While it is a command line tool, it is fully mouse capable. It offers everything the nerd of today could want in a process viewer. It colours everything, shows a map of the CPU load, you can drill down into any process and its structure. Need options? btop
has you covered! Theming is integrated, even if you want your process viewer to look like a 70s green terminal display. Sorting by anything is there. A huge amount of options, a help that explains all the keys, even vim style key binding option.
All all of that directly from extra/btop. No AUR compiling shenanigans!
Never has there been a better command line process viewer. And I discovered it only by a podcast I am listening to.
Isn’t it a beauty?
Just downloaded and installed Mission Center, I really like it ! Thanks
same ^
I have KDE Plasma System monitor placed in my top panel
Another vote for Plasma System Monitor, - it’s infinitely customisable and shows me what I need to see at a glance.
