Playonlinux just keeps reinstalling

I hate the idea of buying a MAC just to run photo software with AI denoising, but if you don’t run Windose that’s your only remaining choice.

It’s all about games now, yes. However, it is because of those games that have made massive improvements in the overall number of apps that are able to work. And, more importantly, the number of developers who actually think about Linux. Topaz is old software, unless they’ve made new versions, so compatibility for apps like those aren’t really the focus.

That said, it may not be Bottles, but it’s working for you. Focus on that.

Oh yeah, I’m not against the game people at all, they bring a lot of improvements. This is a niche area, it just gets sacrificed. Life.

Really, Topaz has been superseded by something called DXO DeepPRIME.
Only runs on a Mac or Microsoft.

Yeah, I used DXO a few years back. Didn’t remember it til you mentioned it. Used to use them alongside ON1.

As far as denoising is concerned, have you tried darktable or RawTherapee?
Maybe even G’Mic?

Couldn’t you use lightzone?

I use both Darktable and Raw Therepee, both are great programs, but only AI can do the level of denoising you need for small sensor cameras.

It’s close to two stops of noise reduction with AI, about one with the others.

Yeah, remembering the interface for Topaz apps now, and remembering the granularity they had. Truly photography-focused apps.

Though I know both open source solutions have great granularity as well.

DXO is the new champion, it even does well with the Panasonic FZ80, a camera that pushes small sensor cameras to the physical limits and is often criticized for grainy and noisy pictures. I’ve seen people do amazing things with that camera and DXO software.

I may just end up getting a MAC mini just to run that.
Just hate buying a computer for one application.
Currently, I own an FZ300 & FZ1000II, I like bridge cameras for bird shots and telephoto.

Is lightzone no good?

I don’t know, honestly. It’s been around for a long time, and on DPreview which is a big photographer hangout, it is never mentioned.

Darktable, Raw Therepee and DXO is all they talk about. Sometime Denoise, but not as much lately.

Of course that’s the Linux users, obviously Photoshop has a lot of fans.

As a freelancer. there’s something I’ll never do, whether for work or play.

For work: There were some apps I used to use for screencasting. OBS, yes, but also Snap Camera, Samsung Dex, etc. Ultimately, I decided that they were more for convenience than requirements, and went full Linux.

For play: I love Pokémon, and even though I’ve never played it, I also love Uncharted. Both for years were locked to Nintendo and PlayStation, with the latter becoming recently available on Steam. I’m a PC gamer, so buying a device that is just for games (and other entertainment) was just not happening.

Of course, it’s all based on sacrifice in any case.

By using Linux-compatible apps only, I sacrifice some features, time to relearn stuff, and general convenience.

By using Windows-only apps, I sacrifice, privacy, independence, and future access to software alternatives.

They both have some benefits, though. Just a matter of choosing which ones you value more. Unless working for a company, then you have no choice.

I’m waiting for all these AI gurus who do most of their AI work on Hugging Face to build an AI denoiser for Linux. It may happen.

I’ll use Topaz as long as I can, if that fails, I’ll have to decide what I’ll do.

I’ve never used Windows for personal use, used OS/2 when it was available, moved to Linux as OS/2 died, so, been here for a while. I’m not a young person :} My first computer was a Radio Shack TRS-80.

That said, I need an AI denoiser for my small sensor telephoto cameras. If you have a full frame or an APS-C sensor, you may not need any AI program, they have enough dynamic range to run as is.

I don’t sell my photos, it’s all just for fun. So it just comes down to what will work.
Used Macs aren’t expensive on Ebay, so I may go that route if necessary.
That doesn’t mean it would replace my Linux machines.
