Plasmashell High Ram Usage Over Time

Plasmashell uses a high amount of memory, seemingly using more over the span of an hour or two

I have two systems, one mine and one a friend’s, that both have this issue. On mine, it can get up to 7-8 GB of usage. On my friend’s system, I’ve seen it go as high as 20 GB, resulting in crashes and system freezes

Restarting plasmashell seems to start it back at it’s normal, low usage (less than 1 GB), but it goes back up to that higher usage over the course of an hour or two

Curiously, I’ve seen this tied to the slideshow wallpaper feature, of all things! It’s compounded by the presence of multiple screens too (multiple updating wallpapers). I’ve observed the GPU memory consumption reliably tick up, every time the wallpaper changes, eventually consuming 8GB+ GPU memory and causing system wide issues.

It’d be worth mentioning @RetroRanger, whether you’re using Wayland or X11. It’s something I’ve only encountered under Wayland.

Very odd
Both systems are using Wayland
Neither use the slideshow wallpaper feature, but both do have multiple monitors

I’m curious as well. I have a dual-monitor setup, but I haven’t noticed any increase in plasmashell RAM usage over time.

Here’s mine after two hours:

it could be cache or a buffer is not cleared after each changed or better yet the wallpaper is still open in a zombie process

For whatever it is worth, I also experience this problem on Kubuntu, X11 with a single monitor and no changing wallpapers.
