After updating to KDE Plasma 6.8.0, notification popups appear as blank or dark rectangles. The text becomes visible in the same popup after approximately 35 seconds.
This affects:
notify-send notifications
Browser notifications
System notifications, including Wi-Fi changes
Notification delivery appears to work; the problem seems to involve rendering or updating the popup.
System
Distro: EndeavourOS
Plasma / KWin: 6.8.0
Session: Wayland
Qt: 6.12.0
GPU: Intel Iris Xe Graphics (Tiger Lake GT2)
Driver: i915
Mesa: 26.2.4-1
Kernel: 7.2.10-arch1-1
Laptop: Dell Vostro 15 3510, Intel Core i5-1135G7
Relevant logs
KWin repeatedly reports:
Failed to allocate a graphics buffer for a swapchain
It also logs:
This plugin does not support setting window masks
Plasma logs:
No QSGTexture provided from updateSampledImage(). This is wrong.
I also observed this notification layout warning:
QGridLayoutEngine::addItem: Can't add Body_QMLTYPE_617
(id="bodyLabel") at cell (1, 0) because it's already taken by
Summary_QMLTYPE_639 (id="summary")
I don’t know whether these messages are directly responsible for the notification issue.
Troubleshooting
Updated the system and rebooted.
Changed the Global Theme and Plasma Style to Breeze; the issue persisted.
Temporarily tested the Qt Quick software rendering backend; no fix.
Temporarily tested a KWin overlay-related environment override; no fix, and it was reverted.
Tested disabling Blur; this did not resolve the problem, and the original effect setting was restored.
Confirmed org.freedesktop.Notifications is owned by plasmashell.
Confirmed notify-send exits successfully.
pacman -Qkk plasma-workspace reported zero altered files.
Questions
Is this a known Plasma 6.8.0 / Qt 6.12.0 notification rendering issue on Wayland?
Could the repeated KWin swapchain allocation failures be related?
Is there a known workaround or existing bug report?
I would prefer not to reset my Plasma configuration or reinstall packages without evidence that doing so would help.
Video showing KDE Plasma notification popups rendering as blank, dark rectangles on EndeavourOS with Plasma 6.8.0, Wayland, and Intel Iris Xe graphics. The notification text is not visible when the popup first appears. The issue affects application and system notifications.
This video, at least for me, doesn’t show anything. Just seems like everything is blurred except some buttons. If you did the blurring, you should try to show the issue you’re experiencing when not using personal or confidential files/apps.
Anyway, as far as troubleshooting is concerned, please try creating another user login account to test if the issue persists. If it doesn’t, then at least you know it’s something in your settings.
Also, please check for another update. This is Arch, updates come fast, and pretty much every day. An update might just fix it.
Notification popups appear as empty/blurry dark rectangles in the bottom-right corner
After roughly 20 seconds the content suddenly renders correctly in the same popup
With the Blur effect disabled, nothing is shown at all
With Blur enabled, only the blurred rectangle is visible until the content finally appears
Relevant log while triggering a notification:
plasmashell: No QSGTexture provided from updateSampledImage(). This is wrong.
(repeated several times)
Tested with notify-send (had to raise the timeout so the popup stays long enough to see the content appear). Restarting plasmashell does not fix it. Looks like the notification window itself is not being rendered properly at first — only the blur effect around it.
I just ran a full system update and rebooted. Mesa stayed at 26.2.4-arch3.1 on my side (CachyOS) — it didn’t pull the newer version you have.
Unfortunately the issue is still present with the exact same symptoms (blank/blurry notification popup for ~20 seconds, then the content appears, plus the repeated No QSGTexture provided from updateSampledImage() warning).
So at least in my case it doesn’t seem to be fixed by the currently available updates. I’ll keep an eye on further mesa/plasma updates though.
Maybe it is KDE related and maybe it is not because the arch mesa package can be found in the extra repository, and if I am not mistaking your mesa package might be found in a Cachy specific repository. Hence the arch1-1 vs the arch3.1 at the end of the mesa package names.
