Pets are wonderful

Just came from vet. Our cat started peeing around and screaming like banshee. It’s 2 am so let’s make a little quiz:

Quess how much this little trip cost.

P.s. Cat is alive and well. :smirk_cat:

I see that you are in Finland. You returned from the vet around 2 am. I’m looking at this fee schedule, which suggests that you might have been subject to a 100% surcharge during on-call hours:

I don’t know where in Finland you live, so the Helsinki clinic’s prices above may not be indicative of what you paid. I also don’t know what procedures your cat needed, or what medications were prescribed.

I’m guessing that your cat had a urinary tract infection. This condition is not listed on the fee schedule, but it’s not serious, so the expense for treatment shouldn’t be great. I’m making a wild guess:

You paid €1,000, including 24% VAT. (If I win, I’ll donate my prize to your cat’s further recovery.)

My cat story

I’m in a different country. Our cat is, we think, 17.5 years old, having been rescued by us 6.5 years ago, at what we guessed then was 11 years of age. Last week her hind legs failed to support her, and she was no longer able to step into her litter box. I drove our cat to our vet, about 100 km away (we’re in a rural location). The examination fee, including various tests and some medications, was about €500.

Two days later, we received the test results: No problem was found, so further tests are needed. The e-mail estimated the cost of these further tests at a little less than €2,000. In a separate conversation, euthanasia was offered as a less-expensive option.

We refused the additional tests, and we are so far not considering euthanasia.

As I write, our cat lies purring at my feet. She doesn’t show any indication of pain; and she’s using her litter box again without problem. She’s essentially back to normal, for a 17.5-year old cat.

There were many good answers. Exact sum is 893,55€ / 938,41$, / 743,61£). :euro::dollar::pound:

I had to go to Evidensia, which was the only vet-clinic that is open 24h on the area where we live. It’s one of the most expensive vets in Finland. :money_with_wings:

I didn’t mention prize, but thought that I’ll buy a small game from either Steam or GOG for the winner. Since @kwg had the most nearest answer he’s the winner. :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ll go with @sammiev estimate for a minimum.

Edit: I see you already posted the answer. Wow! Didn’t realize it was a 24 hr vet as i know they are more expensive for sure. But that amount seems astronomical to some.

@kwg: It’s possible your fur kid has a saddle thrombosis. Our little girl Vixen had one, and while she regained partial use of her legs, it was a difficult few months afterward, eventually leading to the Rainbow Bridge. All the best karma is being sent to you and your girl.

Saddle thrombosis was my initial concern, which is why we rushed her to the vet immediately. The vet was able to detect a strong pulse on the inside of her legs, and her feet were warm, so the vet ruled out saddle thrombosis. More likely, our cat is suffering from arthritis.

That’s a relief! Glad she’s not at risk for other nastiness. Give her a skritch for me.

OH BTW PETS ARE AMAZINGLY WONDERFUL <3 AGREED MY DOG IS FAMILY AND I COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT HIM

it’s literally a miracle looking into his eyes everyday i wake up. those sweet, cute eyez. i would even say he is an emtional support animal for real.

My two cats that I lost in my divorce in 2013. Siouxsie and Calli.

As I was reading your post, I expected Siouxsie’s mate to be named Banshee:

Actually, my own cat’s name is Callie. In the first photo below, Callie is seen just before I rescued her from a family that could no longer care for her (there was a pending divorce). In that first photo, food had been scattered on the porch. She was then living entirely outdoors, in trees and in a barn. (In the forest, all of her siblings had been killed by predators, but Callie had the strength to survive.)

In the second photo, she is seen in my home, making the difficult adjustment to indoor life about six years ago. Oddly, even today, as I open the door from my house to the outside, she has never shown any interest in going outside. During her first year in my house, she lived under our bed, venturing into the house only at night to eat food and use her litter box. The second photo shows one of her first daytime ventures beyond the safety of the bed.

By the way, in the second photo, you can see a computer in the hallway. Actually, the entire hallway was then lined with computers. I was rescuing these discarded computers from businesses, and then installing Linux, hoping to give these discarded computers a second life.

Here are the two dogs that own us. They are just nice enough to share the house with us.

Caleb on the left, Katie on the right. Katie may look familiar as she is my avatar.

Tomorrow, Dec 18, Katie will be 15 years old. On Dec 20, Caleb will also be 15 years old.
