Pacnew files

Not sure if i have the right category? I just wanted to ask a question regarding a pacnew file i noticed doing an update. /etc/issue has been changed to /etc/issue.pacnew Is this change related to a command bringing up the proper name for endeavourOS? or something? Seems to me i remember some talk about it in a topic but can’t seem to find it. Does one need to merge this. I know it’s probably insignificant but just wondered. I don’t tend to use pacdiff and meld too much as I’m always afraid of merging something i shouldn’t.

You dont need to merge that typically.

Yes, exactly.

issue is provided by the filesystem package, which was just updated.

It comes from upstream Arch, so it’s set to display the version of Arch that is installed.

You’re using EndeavourOS, though, so Endeavour has its own issue file that displays the version of the system labeled as EndeavourOS, not Arch Linux.

The pacnew was generated because the issue file on your system does not match the default upstream issue file.

In this case, you should ignore the pacnew and keep the Endeavour issue file.

Thank You very much for the explanation. I wasn’t sure if it was coming from Arch upstream but I should have suspected that was the case. I’ll mark this as solved and explained. Thanks again!

/etc/issue is usually output to a console, somewhere between the end of the system boot logs and before the login prompt.

If doing a graphical login, you’ll probably never see it.

Used for system messages, ascii art/logos, perhaps inspirational quotes…
