Overview stopped working again - cannot open with Meta key

Looks like this issue has happened again. I was messing about trying to create a new bridged networking for my VM. Something happened with reboot and it got stuck. I reset the PC. Rebooted, keyboard didn’t register any typing. Rebooted. Now I was able to login just fine. Only thing I see not working is the Meta key not launching Overview.

Here’s my usual:

Any help appreciated. This is not a huge deal of course, but I’m so used to just hitting meta for quick access to my open windows.

System Settings > Workspace Behaviour > Desktop Effects > Overview

Set it to Alt+F1. This is the same as pressing the Meta/Super key.

Sadly, does not work.

I noticed that in your previous post about this, you changed/added some file I know nothing about. Maybe it doesn’t work because of that file?

Also, to clarify, are you talking about KDE’s overview feature or KDE’s Activities feature?

Another thing to note is that KDE received a recent update, and because of Wayland-related developments, KDE suffers a similar issue to Gnome in that each update breaks something or the other. So, sometimes, you just have to deal with the breakage until another update.

I am currently in Ubuntu Studio with KDE 5.27, so I have no such issues, though I imagine, you may be one of only a few people experiencing this issue.

One way to check is to visit KDE’s forum and/or bugtracker.

Forum: https://discuss.kde.org/
Bugtracker: https://bugs.kde.org/

Desktop Effects → Overview

By the way, I do not have any Workspace Behaviour menu. Just the General Behaviour. Overview, for me, is located at Apps & Windows → Window Management → Desktop Effects → Overview

Wonder why they’d push out this update without testing?

That’s how being in a development stage works.

Right now, they are pushing mostly for bigger, more important feature inclusion and general stability. So, smaller features may not get the same amount of care as they have a limited team.

Also, everyone’s system is different, not just in hardware, but also in settings. This means that you could have two of the same systems with the same distro, yet have different experiences because of having different settings here or there.

It’s not always the update; in fact, it is usually (9 times out of 10) the user.

PS: As I said, you can check either their forum or bugtracker to see if you can find someone else with a similar issue or even a fix. And, if you want it solved quicker, sign up and log the bug yourself.

Things have changed in plasma 6.1 concerning mapping modifier only keys like meta key: https://www.lorenzobettini.it/2024/06/modifier-only-shortcuts-in-kde-plasma-6-1/

Sadly, setting the key in shortcuts → kwin → overview still isn’t working.

Did you accept the proposal to override the existing shortcut?
Does the default shortcut work? Does it open the application launcher?

Cleared shortcuts everywhere from application launcher and overview so that there wasn’t any overlap. Finally had to press Shift + alt + (fn) F12. Only then overview started working again.

So you had disabled effects altogether

No. I just had to disable and re-enable them for some reason.
