OpenVPN Profile Timeout Issue After Switching to EndeavourOS

Hi everyone,

I previously had the OpenVPN add-on for Network Manager installed on Arch Linux with KDE, and it was working perfectly. However, after switching to EndeavourOS, the same OpenVPN profile no longer connects and results in a timeout.

I’m not entirely sure if this issue is specific to EndeavourOS, but the profile was working fine on Arch, as well works on Windows and Android using the same network connection.

Has anyone else experienced this, or does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Thanks in advance!

Without seeing the specifics it is hard to say. EndeavourOS isn’t doing anything special there but it is possible there is something in the profile that was specific to your Arch install and needs tweaking.

I can’t share the .ovpn profile it self, what specific information you need to know?

Basically you need to go through the profile and see if it references anything that is different on this system.

I’ve experienced issues where the filename of the profile was too long, causing it to fail on import. I suspect it uses the filename as a profile name, but that has character restrictions it’s not accounting for gracefully.

I shortened it to I think 14 characters if memory serves (try 8 first, as a test), and it worked.

Well I tried to renaming the file or changing the settings but none of them made a difference, I’m confused why it was working on Arch simply by just importing the profile and typing in my username & password but in EndeavourOS leads to a timeout

I also tried the openvpn command it self for making sure its not because of network manager, no difference.

To confirm: Have you tried redownloading the file and setting it up from scratch, or are you using the same file you had from the previous installation?

This really shouldn’t make a difference, but just in case it does, maybe try it?

Also, if it’s a paid VPN, please ensure your subscription is still active. This literally happened to me today. — VPN stopped working, and then I couldn’t access the internet, restarted Network Manager multiple times, and even deleted the profiles from the applet. Then I finally went and checked my account. My subscription was inactive.

Yes I did
Yes

The VPN is provided for additional security from a company that I work in, the .ovpn profile file provided by them is working fine on both Windows & Android, it was working on Arch too, I’m currently reinstalling EndeavourOS and I’m replying to this thread using the live boot Firefox
I’ll check it again to see if it works or not with the new installation.

You can maybe just check it from the LiveISO too.

Since its routing all of the traffic I’m afraid of doing it, It may cause the online installer to break
I’ll wait for the installer to complete the installation then check it :+1:

Yeah, that’s what I meant.

For the purposes of simply ruling out the possibility, are you able to re-test from say, a Windows system?

It might just be possible the present connection issue to the VPN server, is external to you.
