Nvidia GeForce Now has an OFFICIAL Flatpak Repo

Nvidia GeForce Now has an official Flatpak repo.

  • Though I had to jump through a hoop or two to get it.

Add their repo:
flatpak remote-add --user --if-not-exists GeForceNOW https://international.download.nvidia.com/GFNLinux/flatpak/geforcenow.flatpakrepo

Install via command line:
flatpak install --user GeForceNOW com.nvidia.geforcenow

When attempting to install, I got this:

┌[wombat☮endeavourmsi]-(~)
└> `flatpak install --user GeForceNOW com.nvidia.geforcenow`
error: The application com.nvidia.geforcenow/x86_64/master requires the runtime org.freedesktop.Platform/x86_64/24.08 which was not found
zsh: command not found: Looking
┌[wombat☮endeavourmsi]-(~)
└>

So I ran:

┌[wombat☮endeavourmsi]-(~)
└> flatpak install org.freedesktop.Platform//24.08

  1. this is not prove that this can run WELL on any other DE distribution.
  2. this is always the same soup as “open Nvidia” but not in repos Kernel
  3. you will see after 10 years for any video card if the still do supports it.

this improve nothing

  1. This has been just released officially. I think we will soon see how it runs on other distros as well. Arch and Arch-based are not the only one to use on gaming, you know.
  2. I’m not certain what that means. Nvidia-open is here to stay, and it’s a good thing for us Linux gamers running Nvidia.
  3. Ten years is a long time in hardware. I think it’s quite early to start worrying about such issues now, moments after this has been officially released.

Why you have to be so negative about something that benefits Linux gamers in general?

i have a 970 GTX video card :

  1. do no work
  2. they have done a soup2 called 580xx
  3. this cant work game any more , because this card have less 4Gb video memory card , so try to imagine in how many seconds the game is over

for better understanding ,
just version 575 drivers , this was working on game , on X11 , and they just push this 580xx at the end , for a 10 years card
in fact all Pascal videos cards that do not have more than 4Gb video memory

since Radeon exists drivers r600 are still well working on X11 / wayland

Please everyone do not support this form of gaming, as more people do it the more likely gaming via a subscription will become the norm and that’s bad for every type of gamer.

It’s offline or uninstalled for me.

There is a place for cloud gaming. It’s been around for years, and it’s not going anywhere. A native Linux GeForce Now app for Linux is a good thing.

For people who can’t afford 70 bucks a game for AAA titles, a subscription-based cloud gaming platform where you have access to most of those games is a good thing.

Many games that cannot be played on Linux at all due to anti-cheat limitations CAN be played on Linux now, NVIDIA’s GeForce NOW cloud gaming service bypasses local Linux anti-cheat limitations by running the game and its anti-cheat software inside NVIDIA’s remote Windows-based data center servers instead of your local machine.

But… Like I always say, LINUX IS ABOUT CHOICE. You don’t like the idea of a native GeForce Now app for Linux? Great… then don’t use it.

I don’t like the idea where cloud gaming will become the norm and where corporations make sure the hardware prices become even higher so that all normal consumers can’t buy gaming pc’s anymore and that the result of that this cloud gaming subscription crap will become the only way to game. Aren’t we all tired of all the subscriptions? This is not about choice but about trying to avoid it becoming the norm, where you will have even less freedom and choice when it comes to gaming in this form. If this becomes the norm you won’t have any choice but a cloud gaming subscription if you want to keep gaming, the only light side is that Indie games will still be around.

What are you talking about?

Cloud gaming is specifically aimed at people who do not have the hardware to play games on their own systems.
In this case, it’s a flatpak, so should work on pretty much any system/de, knowing Nvidia and how much Jensen loves money they probably want this to run pretty much everywhere so everyone has a chance to subscribe and give them money.
I have a gtx1650ti in my laptop, still supported by the current drivers, but, has also just 4gb vram. It can run games, but u have to tune down settings especially in AAA titels.
Also if the 575xx drivers worked better for you, why don’t you install them? https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nvidia-575xx-open-dkms
While yes the naming is weird as nvidia-open is not fully open, amd also has drivers for their cards that aren’t open source that you can install if you need them. In that regard both company are “similar” in some way.

That’s the entire goal of this subscription based gaming crap to get most people on this so it becomes the norm. After which people will have even less choice and freedom when it comes to AAA gaming.

“you will own nothing and be happy”

I doubt the last part will be true, but when gaming subscriptions will become the norm there will be even less freedom of choice.

Gaming is moving on from what we used to know, there are a few choices though.

  1. Sail the seven seas and risk it
  2. Accept it
  3. Accept AAA games are not for you and support indie devs that are making leaps and bounds currently.
  4. Don’t play games

I ain’t smart but I ain’t dumb no way will I ever pay more than $40 for a game but when I do pay that it is because I think it is worth the price/risk of paying that amount.
There are tons of free games out there too, either adapt or fall.

Currently there are a few choices of how you want to game, when subscription cloud gaming becomes the norm it will be the only choice. Do you still see current AAA games for PC being released on DVD?

There are bugger all, I don’t have the money to play AAA games and I am ok with that.
There are a lot of games and fun you can have without it being virtual/faux

you can have nasty error

Well, I don’t know how “nasty” an error that is. Not everyone is using 2 GPUs. Plus, the OP on the Cachy forum has…

multiple versions of the Flatpak gamescope installed and that is causing errors.

Complete explanation to the OP from Cachy forum user TypicalLinuxHead,

One issue I am noticing is that you have multiple versions of the Flatpak gamescope installed and that is causing errors.

This here means it’s failing to set your language localization Failed to execute child process “LC_ALL=C” (No such file or directory).

The one that appears to be crashing you is Failed to create GLES3 context, fallback to GLES2. What it probably means if I had to guess is that GeForceNOW is trying to use your AMD GPU for whatever reason. Or you haven’t updated the Flatpak nvidia drivers.

I’m not certain why you are trying to find all possible negative aspects of this. Linux is about choice, you don’t have to use this piece of software if you don’t want.

If this isn’t for you, that’s fine. But for some it is. This kind of negativity is one of those reasons people have negative view about us Linux users.

I find this thread’s response just… kind of weird. Yeah, I don’t like cloud gaming solutions like GeForce NOW either, but ultimately, that’s just me. If someone else likes them, more power to them. This being on Linux and packaged by Nvidia themselves for Linux desktop is ultimately a positive, even if I don’t plan to use this solution for gaming myself.
