Not able to boot since kernel updates anymore

Ohaï ! I’m all new here =)

First of all thanks a LOT for all that tremendous work on EOS, I come from Manjaro after discovering Arch because it was much more easy to use, but since I discovered this last december 2021 how money or community or security are « managed » I immediately changed my laptops to switch to EOS, which I really prefer its community & all its better ethics, thanks for that, please don’t change this
( ˘ ³˘)

Though, I write here because I’m in trouble, sorry ╮(─▽─)╭

I updated packages with sudo pacman -Suy and it seems kernels changed from linux-lts 5.10.89-1 to linux-lts 5.10.90-1 and from linux 5.15.12.arch1-1 to linux 5.15.13.arch1-1, then my laptop Lenovo T470s couldn’t boot anymore, stuck on Loading initial ramdisk....

I tried several solutions from arch/manjaro forums & discovery site but nothing could resolve my situation here and I’m really embarrassed about it because it seems I just only manage to make situation worse I think.

。:゚(。ノω\。)゚・。

First thing I tried it to do is to change tty or boot to fallback but it didn’t work, then I tried downgrading with pacman -U, repairing grub with discovery site.

I think I also messed up grub because I’m not ask to unlock encrypted disk anymore and I’m falling into Kernel Panic error (I had to put LogLevel=7 in /etc/default/grub), I also tried removing quiet but nothing, to show this error from boot I only managed to take a photo because I can’t find it in logs :x, sorry for that.

signal-2022-01-10-160326_001

Laptop I refurbished but I wiped all partitions from its Windows 10 to only keep EOS, I used LVM on LUKS default assisted partition formatting, EOS and pc work out of the box perfectly for a month, also, BIOS menus are configured to UEFI+Legacy (Both), I tried every configuration here, last is UEFI as it was like before. ESP & BOOT flags on my boot partition are active and have 84% free space btw.

Some useful information to help « debugging » here I guess, sorry, there is a lot :

OK, first thing is a tip for the future. If you get errors during an update, don’t reboot until you fix them.

With that out of the way. It looks like you initrams failed to generate. You disk may be full, damaged or otherwise corrupt.

First try the easy thing. Boot off the ISO, check to make sure the disk isn’t full. Once you have confirmed it isn’t full or freed up some space, arch-chroot into your install and run mkinitcpio -P and see if you still receive errors.

If you need them, there are some arch-chroot instructions here:

It looks like your efi partition is mounted on /boot. Are you running systemd-boot?

It looks like you are using grub, which is the default. Shouldn’t your efi partition be mounted at /boot/efi or did you manually mount it at /boot?

Is that df -h from a chroot? If so, you should mount ensure the efi partition is mounted in the right place before running mkinitcpio -P

I think this is where I messed up, should I only mount /boot/efi ? I mount both at the same time at least once, which may have broken all of it (content in /boot AND in /boot/efi), see different ls -la in my first post.

Do I need to erase all /boot then remount /boot/efi to start all over again from the beginning to ensure I have clean boot files ?

It is from a arch-chroot yes.

It is probably sufficient to mount the efi partition at /boot/efi and then reinstall linux and linux-lts. That should reinstall the kernels and regenerate the initramfs.

You can then clean up any extra kernels and initrams once your system is booting normally.

I did as you told but still got this strange bsdtar error :

[root@EndeavourOS liveuser]# sudo mount /dev/mapper/crypto_LUKS /mnt/
[root@EndeavourOS liveuser]# sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/boot/efi/

Any ideas【・ヘ・?】

I would try running fsck on that ext4 filesystem.

If that is clean. Try deleting all those zero byte initramfs entries.

EDIT: Actually, what filesystem is your root using? I probably shouldn’t assume it is ext4

/boot is fat32
/ is ext4

Should I run fsck on both ? Any special options except -CV ? Also, should I run it into chroot or within live usb ?

Thank you so much for all your help (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

You should only run fsck on the ext4 filesystem. I would run it from outside the chroot.

Let’s see what that produces.

Nothing to see here ? :s

[root@EndeavourOS liveuser]# fsck /dev/mapper/CryptoLUKS
fsck from util-linux 2.37.2
e2fsck 1.46.4 (18-Aug-2021)
/dev/mapper/CryptoLUKS: clean, 879914/30130176 files, 22817206/120513976 blocks

EDIT :
So if everything’s ok I’m gonna remove zero bytes files within /boot/efi is that it ?

Can you delete those 0 byte files? What happens if you remove those and then go back into the chroot and mkinitcpio -P

same errors (╥_╥)

(ls -la /boot/efi in the bottom of paste down here)

You can delete /boot/efi/vmlinuz* and /boot/efi/intel-ucode.img but that won’t fix the problem. It is just some cleanup.

It is interesting that it can write the kernel images to /boot but mkinitcpio can’t write there.

Maybe erase and remake boot partition? Any advice or tutorial ?

It doesn’t look like your efi partition is the issue. It is failing to write to /boot which is actually part of your root filesystem.

What happens if you try to write the initrams somewhere else?

Something like:

mkdir /testdir
mkinitcpio -k /boot/vmlinuz-linux-lts -g /testdir/initramfs-linux-lts.img

If there’s no important data to protect then may suggest doing a clean install with repartitioning the hard drive.

I think I’m confident to remake /boot partition, but reinstall of my / will be awful last solution here

Here is result with ls -la from /boot and testdir :
