New User & My Thoughts

Hi there, I’m a new user of EndeavourOS for about 4 days now & ill like to say where was this distro all my life, I’ve seen it before but never looked into it because I don’t really use based on distros but since I like Arch & this distro stays true to Arch but with a GUI installer and sane defaults, I say ill give it a try & wow I’m loving it easy to set up & good defaults all I had to do it set up the things I normally use, I like arch & all but having to setup something’s that should be a default in my option is annoying then when the distro breaks or more promptly when I break it because I like breaking stuff even when I’m not trying to, it’s not worth having to go through that every install, having those defaults knowing I’m going to use either way makes life easier But the whole point of Arch is the Arch way DIY distro + it’s the reason distros like EndeavourOS exist.

One thing I don’t get is the people who get so heated when u say Endeavour is not arch, my question is what is it then, a Sandwich? (I’m hungry rn typing this out) but for real it’s like covering a strawberry in chocolate & saying its no longer a strawberry It’s just a wrapper (Strawberry is all good by its self but covering it in something makes it ever better right) that goes for all based on distro because at the heart is still say Debian Fedora or Arch some or heavily modified some stays true to the upstream, but that’s the choice of Linux u have options.

But share your thoughts, I want to know what you all think.

Distros Ive used/Started with

  1. Fedora
  2. Debian
  3. Pop! OS
  4. Ubuntu VM
  5. Arch

Welcome! Good to have you with us! As for the Arch/EOS question, - it’s an OS not a religion, just use whatever works for you. At the point where people start defining their whole identity based on what software they use, it gets a little silly. The right tools for the right job. I came from Arch to get away from the rough edges that EOS smoothened down, - as simple as that. I just need things to be up and running so I can get on with work.

Enjoy the journey!

Well put.

Welcome @mystified to the amazing world of EndeavourOS (and Arch) and to our wonderful community.

You are straight to the point, actually there are very few “father” distros where all others come from.

My 2 cents, I have been on Linux since 2000 (Suse at that time). Then for reasons I just skipped it like in 2005/2006 and used Linux Mint LMDE (when it was KDE). Then later on like a few years ago I concluded that Arch is the way to go.

Not for the bleeding edge software but for the install only once and forget about it. I see no point in reinstalling even every few years. Plus the responsiveness and it is a minimal install.

EndeavourOs guys here are doing a great job and gave us a wonderful Arch that is truly Arch.

By the way, I have distrohopped like crazy for several months since January 2021 and no matter where I hop I used to come back to Arch based (for a while) but end up here on EndeavourOS.

You will enjoy I am sure.

By the way, I am playing with CachyOS, been like 48 hours now, just out of curiosity on a spare oldish laptop. Though they modified the kernels a bit it is still IMHO Arch and as “friendly” distro as EndeavourOS. But I still do not feel at home there as I feel here.

Here is “home” for me, no matter where I “travel” or make tours.

I am sure you will enjoy EndeavourOs and the community here.

Welcome home

a simple package list is easy to reinstall all your programs, Keeping regular backups (something you should do no matter the OS) doing a reinstall can be done in as little as 10 minutes (give or take for internet connection) It really doesn’t get any simpler than that.

I like using Arch.
“I use EndeavourOS, btw” doesn’t have the same impact.

I am glad for it. I usually mock the meme via “I don’t use Arch, btw” or “Arch is for pussys” - the latter one only for people who get the Jonny Lawrence reference, though…

The latter would also be for Gentoo and LFS users.

there’s a lot of scrappy, unique, independent distros as well out there. options, like you said.

EndeavourOS is not even Arch Linux - that’s basically to separate for support.
[ Arch support does not support EndeavourOS installs ]

In detail, it is not Arch Linux as of its only one or 23 ways to install an Arch Linux System.
And it sets defaults Arch Linux does not set as defaults.
dracut is used instead of mkinitcpio, packages lists used for the Desktops are curated in a different was as it would be with using Arch Linux package groups or meta packages.
Some configs are changed, basically systemd-boot and grub are preselected to choose from.
Yay is installed. EndeavourOS has some tools added and set some decent theming on the Desktops.

EndeavourOS is somehow a Desktop installer with ISO and guy to install them using Arch.
May you can call it an Arch Linux Customizer ?

In the end it’s your System and you can handle on your personal rules and needs.

Anyway, welcome to the purple universe :enos:
Feel free to have fun with your endeavour!
