Youtube has a lot of talent, time and money to make the lives of developers of 3rd party watch tools as miserable as possible. I am reminded of the mechanism of regulatory capture, where only the big companies can stay ahead of the battle.
Give the people time. They do this for fun, in their spare time. And it gives us a glimpse of a future where we maybe can live without Youtube. It will hurt for a while, but no competition is just a bad idea.
Another thing I learned from using yt-dlp is that youtube is great at intentionally making things cease to work for only some people which adds to the confusion as to what methods work and which do not, an A/B test of sorts. I only used to use yt-dlp so I could easily just play all my subs in a playlist without having to add them all individually. Even now I canāt use youtube without ātweaks for youtubeā by inkdev.
I have been on a mission to lower my youtube usage (especially as background noise or meal time tv) going as far as to buy a DVD player and a bunch of my fave old shows second hand.
Try Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me or Firefly. And be sad with us (the fans) to hear that there was ever only one season of Firefly (although there is a movie that finishes most of the story threads).
One of my mates recommended FireFly also. On the other end of the sci-fi spectrum Iām waiting on RedDwarf Series 1-8 to be delivered. Another one is Battlestar galactica as Iāve never seen it even though my PCs are all named after the ships in it.
Iāll take a look at the other ones you mention also as Iāve not heard of them.
After watching Firefly you might realize why Joss Whedon was once a highly praised, highly respected director (if that wasnāt already the case after Buffy, which is great as well).
I still do this as I have several series on DVD. as you know the thrift store is a gold mine.
If Iām downloading a song Iāve been getting failure/forbidden warnings lately with yt-dlp lately. they are choosy with who they break for, true, and they are choosy with what content they tag as well.
the copyrights, the artists, the content creators, the monetization, the control..would all be there if we replaced Youtube with a FOSS youtube but what you are saying is living without it. I think thatās easier said than done but both you guys are making me think about it, which is good.
I have been unsuccessful in leaving youtube behind, and I have been trying for a year or so but I try and rely on it a bit less each month. They keep trying to get my phone number which is doing a lot of the heavy lifting lately. The logic that me giving them my phone number on login to prove I am not a hacker doesnāt make sense because the hacker would just give them a number they have access to. Itās just data collection. @DromundKaas Thatās Firefly bought.
