New-To-Me Custom Built PC / GPU Journey

I would go for a gpu(or two since you have listed two) that supports 1440p gaming so that you can if you want to and that you are prepared for the future without needing to replace it then.

I’m definitely not financially able to have 2. But, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 seems pretty damned powerful for a mid-range GPU…

Please update your Bios to 7B58v1B from 2024-08-09 (Fixed CVE-2024-36877 security issue.) or at least 7B58v1B4 from 2022-03-10 (added Resizable BAR support).

Nvidia. As much as I’d like to pull the trigger with a Nvidia GPU, Linux driver issues still creep into my mind.

I already have this bookmarked: Z370 GAMING M5 Drivers & Downloads

Using M-Flash to update the BIOS seems really easy…

You might as well go for an RTX 4060 then, MSRP: $320 ($300)?

4060 8GB vs 3060 12GB. Still, something to consider.

Plus: 4060 - Bus Interface PCIe 4.0 x8. I need x16

I went from an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX with 24G vram to an Nvidia RTX 5080 with 16G vram, I game at 4K and I haven’t noticed a difference with having less vram now.

I hear ya. And you’re probably right. Still, the biggest issue with that GPU…

4060 - Bus Interface PCIe 4.0 x8. I need x16

You are right about that, didn’t realized that 4060 had such a different connector slot. Too bad!

Physically the 4060/4060 Ti will fit into the slot as it is an x16 card but unfortunately only 8 lanes are connected. With PCIe 4.0 the 8x would not be such a problem, but unfortunately with PCIe 3.0 it becomes a problem because you then lose performance as the bandwidth of the bus decreases.

Well, so far I’m leaning towards the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060. Seems AMD is being left behind. At least for now. I’ll continue to investigate.

Is an RX 6700 XT too expensive in the USA? That would also be an option if it isn’t.

Around $700 new. Refurbished by AMD, around $340-360.

Okay that’s way too expensive for this card. Too bad.

To be honest, you’ve had a N100 until now and it only featured an integrated graphics chipset.

Therefore, essentially every GPU would be an upgrade. I would pick up a Radeon RX6600 which might be considered as entry level by some or even insufficient by others. But it’s a good value proposition for its price (~ $220). An Intel Arc B580 would outperform it, indeed. But you barely find those listed for reasonable prices ( > $300).

As you’ve written in other posts, your main usage would be image editing, a bit of video editing and the occasional steam game every once in a while. Don’t get lost in the realm of actual “gaming” hardware recommendations… when it is not your primary use-case.

Other than that, I’m still a bit surprised by the fact that you’re switching out a MiniPC with a full sized system. You’re going from one extreme to the other, at least in terms of the form factor.

Currently, AMDs mobile CPUs such as the Ryzen AI 9 HX370 does include the Radeon 890M integrated GPU cores, which are based on the RDNA 3.5 architecture. They do perform quite well, even in modern games. Sure, it’s not outperforming a NVidia RTX 3060, yet. But it’s not that far behind. With significantly less power consumption. By a factor of 10, round about. This is very promising for AMDs upcoming CPU generation that will hopefully include a APU that features the same number of graphics cores as the Radeon 890M, eventually even with RDNA 4.0 cores.

I am pretty much lost in the world of hardware but I wonder if you have something like this in your mind:

I have the RX 6750 XT and it should be reasonably priced.

This is true.

Well, I had a full-sized HP Envy for a long time. Moved to a used Apple MacMINI, which got me interested in the miniPC craze. Plus, the miniPC is less expensive than traditional tower PCs. And in all honesty, this custom built tower is just something I couldn’t pass up.

That might have been a good one to toss into the consideration pile. But Its Bus Interface is PCIe 4.0 x8, while I need x16.
