New installation, problems with Wayland

Hi, I have installed Endeavour on my system today but wayland is just constantly crashing on me and I cant find out why.

I have tried reinstalling qt6-wayland but that did not make a difference. Anybody else has an idea?

Is this fresh install with the latest ISO? What is the hardware. Post the url. You can do this from the live ISO with internet connection.

Did you even have plasma-wayland-session installed prior to updating it to plasma 6 because that’s what was needed for wayland prior to and on plasma 5.

Edit: Was just wondering if you were actually using Wayland before updating to plasma 6?

I have a computer with a problem on wayland using a Nvidia card. The two laptops I have with no problems. Try changing the display before login.

I don’t know. I just installed it via the ISO and chose plasma during the installation.

@tpm what do you mean by change the display? Attaching a different monitor?

True. I did not use Wayland before I upgraded. After looking onto this more this appears to be a Wayland - Nvidia problem. I found a articale on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/1b2j90j/plasma_6_doesnt_work_under_wayland_with_nvidia/
and looks to be a DRM problem with nvidia. I am not having problems with plasma 6 under X11

Not sure if this is a problem on a hybrid laptop or something else but i have been using Wayaland with nvidia on a desktop with no issue.

I see from your hardware output though you have a lot of drives zfs file system? Using flatpak? Could be other things causing it. :man_shrugging:

Hm, that seems unlikely because it works nicely on my Laptop. The only thing that differs in that regard to my laptop is the gpu vendor (laptop has AMD) and the amount of drives connected to it. I hope that the amount of drives is not related… because that would be kind of weird.
So GPU it is? Well then having to use x11 for the time being.

For future reference. I found out the cause and a solution.
The reason for wayland not working is because it requires a kernel parameter to be set for the nvidia driver - namely nvidia_drm modeset=1

EndeavourOS wants to set kernel parameters via the bootmanager, so the nvidia-inst script that is used in endeavour tries to do this automatically either for grub or systemd-boot, the two options presented in the installer.

Unfortunately I do not use either of those because I followed the unofficial guide to install endevaour with zfs on root, which enables me to use zfsbootmenu with refind in front of it.

Thus I have to put the kernel parameters in zfsbootmenu. To do this install the zfsbootmenu package from aur. This will install a helper script zbm-kcl to edit the parameters that are used during boot.

So for my case this means putting in this

rw nvidia_drm.modeset=1

It may also be required to set nomodeset for refind.
/efi/EFI/zbm/refind_linux.conf

“Boot default” “zbm.prefer=zRoot ro quiet loglevel=0 zbm.skip nomodeset”
“Boot to menu” “zbm.prefer=zRoot ro quiet loglevel=0 zbm.show nomodeset”

This is kind of what i thought as a noticed you had zfs and wondered how you installed it. I have no experience with zfs.

Basically I installed zfs_dkms in the live iso, changed the calamares script to include zfs_dkms, create the zfs partitions manually. Installed endevaouros to a temp drive and copied the installation over.

I personally don’t have a use for zfs. I use btrfs and am very happy with btrfs-assistant and snapper setup. My knowledge about zfs is only what i can read about it. Glad you have it working. Wayland would have had the same issues without the kernel parameter on any setup with nvidia.
