New installation on Alienware Area 51

Hello all,

As per the title I have a new install on my PC. I have read around, but to be honest not that much because as reading I can tell the issues I’m facing are over my head. I have to go out as soon as I post this but I’m really hoping someone can help me in resolving these issues so I have a working system and can get on with what I need to do. I most likely won’t be able to try anything or add any new information until tonight or maybe tomorrow morning.

When I reboot, not always but sometimes there have been times when the screen has frozen at login and I’ve had to wait maybe 1-2 mins before being able to type my password. Also one time after typing my password the screen just went black before the welcome screen was displayed again maybe for about a min. And not all the time but the majority of the time after the welcome screen has been displayed I get a message on the desktop saying:

I have installed linux-lts and linux-lts-headers

and I’ve run nvidia-installer-check and sudo nvidia-installer-dkms

It would be fantastic if it was possible for me to get the help I need to resolve these issues. I do understand though that I may be asking for too much help and if that’s the case that’s fine, I’ll put windows back on here and go back to using my thinkpad with EnOS.

Many thanks in advance,

Muj

Since your system works at least partially, I’d try another DM first. Which dm are you using?

Also, Cinnamon may cause the “poor performance…” message. For that, using another desktop may help.

If none of these simple measures don’t help, then let’s think of other possible solutions.

Could this be related? Wrong GPU ID?

@muj

Edit:
Your system a desktop? What monitors do you have setup to it and what is the connection? Display Port? HDMI? I see a picture of it on the Dell site. Does it have two video cards?

Thank you both for your replies, I hope you are both okay.

I’m not sure if I should go off straight away and try a different DE and DM as @manuel suggested.

@ricklinux I only have one monitor and one GPU. I bought the monitor separately it is this monitor

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/acer-predator-4k-xb321hk-32-3840x2160-ips-g-sync-gaming-widescreen-led-monitor-black-red-mo-099-ac.html

My GPU is connected to the monitor via the Display port.

Is there a way I can confirm my GPU is working correctly? again I installed nvidia-installer-dkms with the lts kernel and headers.

I’ll likely report back tomorrow.

Thanks guys

Just to add, after using gnome a couple of hours the only thing I’ve noticed is when I was rebooting it got stuck on a black screen for at least 2-3mins with only the cursor blinking in the top left corner. I’m not sure but I’m thinking that could be maybe to do with the watchdog timer. Tomorrow I’ll blacklist it, I haven’t checked but I’ll also make sure nowatchdog is in my kernel parameters.

Did you install Gnome desktop?

Yeah, lol sadly. Don’t really like gnome.

I don’t care for it much myself either. I use Xfce, KDE and Cinnamon. Did you do a total reinstall and go through the process again?

yep.

Is there some way to confirm whether the gpu and driver are working correctly?

I did get the hang on the black screen when rebooting. that was after I had configured uwf

Try this

lsmod | grep -i nvidia

@ricklinux I’ll have to post back tomorrow with that. I’m so shattered, eyes stinging and in bed typing on laptop.

I really would like to be able to fix these issues, please help if you can.

  • I reinstalled Gnome but before and after running nvidia-installer-check and sudo nvidia-installer-dkms I checked lsmod | grep nvidia and the results were the same before and after the installation of nvidia-installer-dkms

[muj@Blackstone ~]$ !24
lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia_drm 57344 4
nvidia_modeset 1220608 7 nvidia_drm
nvidia 28286976 352 nvidia_modeset
i2c_nvidia_gpu 16384 0
drm_kms_helper 221184 1 nvidia_drm
drm 520192 7 drm_kms_helper,nvidia_drm

Sorry I made a mistake missing out the -i flag

[muj@Blackstone ~]$ lsmod | grep -i nvidia
nvidia_drm 57344 4
nvidia_modeset 1220608 7 nvidia_drm
nvidia 28286976 343 nvidia_modeset
i2c_nvidia_gpu 16384 0
drm_kms_helper 221184 2 nvidia_drm,i915
drm 520192 8 drm_kms_helper,nvidia_drm,i915

I edited kernel parameters by adding nowatchdog to /etc/default/grub between the quotes.

Then run sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg Then I stop the kernel module from being loaded by blacklisting it. I created this file: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklisted.conf and entered blacklist iTCO_wdt Then regenerate the initramfs with sudo mkinitcpio -P

Because in the past when using intel cpu I’ve had lots of crashdumps I enabled KMS
I edited /etc/mkinitcpio.conf with MODULES=(i915) and ran sudo mkinitcpio -P

These are my errors at the moment:

I haven’t had much luck trying to troubleshoot them on my own. I found:

with this post in the above link

I'd guess that your ECC error can be addressed by a BIOS setting that disables the ECC check.

And,
This guy solved your problem by updating the BIOS
https://www.centos.org/forums/viewto...c9f5e&start=10

Which should be one of the first things done all the time on newly acquired hardware...

But after googling and searching my BIOS I can’t find anything in the BIOS related to ECC.

I found the following thread related to the ACPI BIOS error

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1610727

which led me to a possible fix here

but again because I don’t know much, I don’t have a clue how to even try the possible fix. It looks like a script to me, Idk.

After everything that I’ve done I still get glitches at login for at least 1-2mins, and even after blacklisting watchdog I still see a message saying watchdog didn’t stop. Also my wireless mouse was working earlier not connected to the wire but now it’s not, it only works plugged in.

I didn’t realise nvidia-installer-dkms that was a module. I thought modules were only loaded with modprobe

Thanks in advance for any help.

This one is related to USB on boot as far as I can see. I would look into the USB settings in BIOS and see if you can disable / enable XHCI pre boot or some such entry. If not maybe try disconnecting USB devices one at a time and see if it goes away so you can narrow down the issue.

@BONK Thank you very much for giving me something to go on. If I am able to find the USB bios setting related to XHCI do I enable or disable it?

also if I can’t find the settings did you mean I should disconnect USB devices and then run sudo journalctl -p3 -xb to see if the error goes when I disconnect the USB?

I only have one USB connected which is for my wireless mouse. Is it an issue that the USB for my wireless mouse was connected whilst I was doing the installation?

Which ever one makes the error go away.

One at a time. I am still trying to find more information. You would want to boot into the system without that device attached and then run the command but since it is your mouse and i assume keyboard? not very practical. maybe try a different mouse / keyboard or just another usb port if it is in USB3 try USB2

it’s just the mouse usb. @BONK Thank you very much. I’ll try your suggestions.

So I took the usb out which is for my wireless mouse but no change to errors. Obviously though my keyboard and mouse are connected via usb. I found some settings for the usb, they are all enabled. I’ll try disabling them one by one in a min and check for errors

Heres pics of the bios

20201123_131003

20201123_131015

I disabled the front and the back USB but the error was still there. I noticed this whilst rebooting:

Screenshot_20201123-133850_Video Player

I don’t know if you can read it.

it says: Failed to unmount /oldroot/sys
shutdown [1]: Failed to finalise file system

I don’t understand the watchdog timer, I have blacklisted it I get no output from grep.

[muj@Blackstone ~]$ lsmod | grep iTCO_wdt
[muj@Blackstone ~]$

I didn’t want to try and disable anything else in the BIOS because I don’t have a clue what the result could be.

lol I’m a bit confused like normal. I just disabled the back usb in the bios but left my mouse and keyboard plugged in at the back. The (mouse single usb wire) is still working but the keyboard (2 usb wires) isn’t working. The mouse isn’t connect via wifi because the wifi usb isn’t plugged in. idk why the mouse is working plugged in from the rear.

I haven’t got another mouse or keyboard (i’ll double check with my older son when he gets home from school). But my mouse and keyboard together cost over £200 I don’t want to use something else.

I’m pretty sure I’ve tried all you suggested

@BONK I don’t really want you to be researching and spending loads of your time trying to help me with this. Maybe I bit of more than I can chew and I should just put windows back on here. Let me know if you think the issues are long or easy to deal with. If it’s a hassle, I’ll save everyone time and put windows back. I’ve never maintained a Linux system over a long period of time, I don’t know whether it’s likely for there to continually be big problems that I can’t fix on my own.

Well the one you are looking for is the third one down from the first screen shot. Asmedia XMC controller. You may need to install firmware support for that…

The oldroot thing i saw somewhere here before…

Here it is

Hey I just looked all the way up through the thread and missed something. You are using the LTS kernel. Try zen…
In terminal do:
sudo pacman -S linux-zen linux-zen-headers
Then same terminal:
systemctl reboot
Go ahead and put everything back the way it was first. Then check the journal again.

That is pretty new hardware for the LTS kernel.

:+1: I’ll first do what you just said about the zen kernel. lol zen’s strange name for a kernel i’ll have to read about it later.

I really don’t know how I’ll be able to install firmware if I need it. I’ve only ever installed a bios update on my thinkpad but thats because lenovo provides a bootable iso for Linux. Dell just provides a .exe proggram.

I’ve got the linux zen kernel installed and running and I’ve disabled Asmedia XMC but I’m still getting the errors. I’m just going to read the link you posted.

Is Asmedia XMC meant to be enabled but I need to get firmware for it?

And should I do this:

sudo nano /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

change:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block keyboard keymap filesystems fsck"
to:
HOOKS="base udev autodetect modconf block keyboard keymap filesystems fsck shutdown"

sudo mkinitcpio -P
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

sudo systemctl restart systemd-coredump.socket
sudo systemctl reset-failed

Asmedia should be enabled.

Check & post output

lsmod |grep xhc

Also

dmesg |grep xhc

cheers @ricklinux let me first enable it and boot back in. It was enabled in the beginning so, so far I haven’t made any changes to the bios settings.
