New install with random freezes

Hello! I have been using EndeavourOS for years already, and today after I finished building my new AM5 build I’ve been dealing with some issues I can’t diagnose.

With a brand new install of endeavour with kde I installed steam and put a game to download, only to find the system frozen after a few minutes away, and no TTY access.

Some applications like firefox freeze after a less than 30 minutes with the system on and then other apps and finally kwin stops responding and the UI goes gray.

The PC sometimes can give a boot error after a reboot but it works fine the second time.

My specs:

  • Ryzen 9 9950X
  • Asus TUF B850M Plus WiFi
  • RX 6750 XT
  • M.2 Crucial P3 1TB PCIe 4
  • 32gb (2x16) Kingston Fury 6000mhz
  • Corsair CV750w Power Supply
  • linux6.18.2-arch2-1

I’ve listed some components I don’t know are helpful since I’m using spare parts from my old build waiting for shipping. The inxi -Fazlogs are available at https://0x0.st/P-1B.txt

Any insight on the issue would be very helpful.

Have you run a full memory test on the RAM?

Did you flash the latest BIOS to your new MB?

The bios is updated, and I didn’t really test the RAM yet, I’ll start running it now and return an answer to you soon.

@dalto beat me to it, but i would suspect the ram first.

Test it at its current max speed, if that gives errors lower the speed in uefi/bios and test again. If still errors remove one of the ram modules (i assume you have 2?) and test again. if no more errors the other ram modules is faulty, if still errors the ram module currently installed is at fault.

@dalto memtester takes too long, but I can already see the problem, running a 24gb it gave a very big range of addresses failling the tests in the very first loop so I didn’t wait for it to finish.

one stick is still going strong on the test so I guess that’s a win, and I did ask a local shop to test them before I repackaged and stored until I got the rest of the parts…

thanks for the help.

Sometimes re seating a ram module can help, or cleaning the contacts with a piece of printing paper.

But at least you found the problem!

it failed the memtester first loop run at around 1/8 of the ranges of memory immediately, looks like a faulty or damaged chip, I’ll maybe do some more tests and send it to someone who can try and fix the module.

At least I didn’t bought it during the shortage, but months prior

Is it still under warranty? Can you get it replaced?

I got the build in the middle of last year, so the shop’s warranty is already expired and kingston does not offer extended factory warranty. So I’m only left with sending this to a technician who can try to find the problem and fix it. memtester is hitting very specific ranges of memory so I guess it’s a faulty chip that can be switched.

Again thanks for the help and may the new year bring better luck to you than the last one gave me xD
