Network traffic

ok so i have a router from my ISP , my laptop is connected with Ethernet and the rest of my 5 to 6 devices with wifi.
the other day i decided to log into my ISP’s portal to see what’s going on there , since I’ve never bothered before to look. To my amazement i found this :

now there is no way any of my devices is uploading so much data !
i asked my ISP about it , but yea, no response …
Iv’e searched on how to monitor my traffic THROUGH ROUTER , on my pc, nothing really seems viable. I cant install optional firmware (for traffic monitoring) on the router , as it’s not really mine, its rented from ISP.
The router interface doesn’t show real time traffic, and the traffic it does show , doesn’t add up to all that data.
So i’m at a bit of a lost , is something uploading stuff the hole time ? Its not my PC that i’m sure off.
is there any monitoring tool for arch that can show traffic that goes through router, on my pc , without having to change settings on router?
what i looked at so far is ntoppng , wireshark and some others that i can’t remember now .
from what i conclude it’s not really possible without changing settings and what nots on router, which i’m hesitant to do cause i don’t want to stuff up router with things i don’t know what i’m doing …

sorry if all this sound confusing, i’m confused too lol

If your router is also your wireless AP, there isn’t much you can do if it doesn’t provide the data you need.

I put my own router in front of the router from my ISP so I have more visibility and control.

That being said, if that data is accurate, it does seem concerning.

it is , that’s why i’m trying to get to the bottom of this.
think i must just pester the ISP again for an answer
i"m surprised they haven’t contacted me regarding this amount of uploading data, cause that screams torrenting lol

alarming-looking for sure
700GB seems like you would notice HD filling up. Where on your HDD or SDD are all these files?
Are you sure the ISP isn’t measuring yay updates? (slim)
Unless “upload” or “download” doesn’t mean what we think it means in isp parlance, maybe it means net traffic or something?
Yikes.

it’s supposedly UPLOADING , so not filling up my ssd .
not sure i understand you atm :upside_down_face:

I use iftop, very imple and light.

Are you running some p2p (torrent alike) or rsync backup services in the system? 700G upload is a lot.

that wont be so much data ,and it’s not my pc that causing it i’m sure

I get that a lot

lol:zany_face:

i do occasionally download torrents , but as soon as it’s done , i remove it and exit application. It’s like 5min at a time i download. Doubt it’s that.
i’ve got timeshift which only backups at boot and keep 1 , besides i don’t think backups uploads to net ?

looks like that would only see traffic on the installed machine ?
i want to see all traffic that goes through router , (my pc , 2 xboxes , 6 phones)

A lot of ppl/organizations use cloud services for backups.

no my timeshift backup to my ssd
not ideal i know

I assume that has to be done on the router side. Don’t know what kinda router that you’re using. If it doesn’t do it, maybe it’s time to put your own in front of the ISP router.

dalto mentioned that yes .
how exactly do i go about doing that ? ( iv’e got a spare router lying here)
i just scare i stuff up something on the ISPs router and then it’s call out fees and all that drama

6 phones.

How are those people using their phones?
Or all they all yours?

If they play games on the phones, it probably explains the upload traffic.

its my 3 kid’s phones. my wife’s phone and her tablet, and my phone.

my 2 younger kids play games on there yes , surely that can’t amount to nearly 700gigs??

Thats’s very easy. Find a good firmware which meets your needs, flash it to your own router. Plug the upstream cable of the router to the isp router. Assign a staic ip to that port on the isp router. Connect all your home devices to the new router.

oh and the 2 xboxes play online , does it upload so much data to play online ?
see that’s why i want to see the traffic for each device …
