Hello! so i’m a relatively new linux daily user. I’m running an AMD system, with a 7600xt for my dGPU, using the mesa drivers. Every now and then i’ll have system freezes, it varys on how long they happen and what im doing while they happen, and im trying to figure out how i can narrow down and figure out what the issue is. The system freezes cause audio, video, and input to freeze entirely, not a full shutdown or anything though, it just stays that way indefinitely until i hard shut down the system, and it’s only ever recovered once.
Welcome @RadioFoxKR2 !
Without more info about your system I would first have a look at memory and swap.
How much memory does your setup have? And have you activated swap? Try these commands:
free -h
inxi -m
this was the output
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 30Gi 10Gi 4.5Gi 687Mi 16Gi 19Gi
Swap: 9Gi 0B 9Gi
So, plenty of swap then.
What I sometimes do, when looking into intermittent problems, is run:
journalctl -f
in terminal.
That will output journalentries as they are written to the logs. Hopefully something will appear just before the freezes happen.
If there is anything in the logs that you don’t understand or trust, you may show the logs here for others to help you, with
journalctl -k -b -0 | eos-sendlog
See [1] for more info on how to do that.
Make sure you do not overclock the graphics card.
Alright, im going to leave that running i guess and see what happens. i’ll reply back when i hopefully have something
i’ve not done anything to the GPU other than install and use Mesa drivers
It may be well worth your while to look into journalctl and its many options. It’s a great way to analyse logs and to filter the information in the logs to hone in on the symptoms you’re investigating.
