Native nightlight or redshift? or other?

For three days now I’ve had my new 27" flat. Aside from being nuclear bright :smiling_face_with_sunglasses: , it’s a good screen.

Cinnamon nightlight tamps that down pretty well. A little too orange (warm) is the result.

I tried redshift -O 3500 (or 4000) and that tamps it down too with less warmth. I like the redshift balance.

Since they are both called “blue-light reducers” and two different looks…

my questions are: What apps do you use to reduce brightness? I only know these two. is dialing down the blue the best answer as far as eye health? what am I not considering?

thanks for any enlightenment whatsoever

For X11 sessions, those are both good. When I was running multiple X11 systems, I would disable any built-in night-lights and use redshift, just for ease of using the same settings.

On Cinnamon, I changed the night-light temp to 4800; the default was way too dark for me.

Just because you haven’t mentioned it here have you checked the monitors in-built settings? It made a huge difference on my last one.

I did neglect to mention this: it can’t be used manually.

In fact when I go into settings (back button on monitor) it does not recognize my arrow keys. or enter keys. I thought “well maybe it doesn’t understand the keyboard” so I tried different keys and nothing.

In fact for navigation it shows pictures of 4 arrow keys with a middle enter key…like it came with a remote??

so I am in a position of having to depend on foss to bail me out since I can’t access the internal monitor settings. I shoulda mentioned this—good observation

I’m wondering if it is like my last one where the button to get into the settings was sort of like a joystick where you moved it the directions? It took me looking up the instructions online to figure that one out.

I ended up disabling all monitor brightness controls - on the monitors themselves - and just use night-lights.

Managing brightness seems to depend on the GPU hardware, so a good app on one GPU is not good on another.
Anyway, there’s lots of options, like managing plain screen brightness, or dark readers for various apps.

I guess you have already used the following command:

yay -Ss brightness

or the same with other or additional keywords.
