My last hour with Freetube

spinning my wheels tonight.
some nights are like this. Most aren’t.
Youtube has to rear its ugly head sometimes.

if you ever saw Mad Max Thunderdome, youtube is master/ blaster:

Not been usable for me most of the day. Oddly I have had one or two that would start and work however 99% the rest of the time its just the same Bad HTTP Status error your getting.

should mention you can copy the address from freetube and download with yt-dlp and that will allow you to view them locally if you don’t want to go to youtube.

Another option is to use my script to open it in MPV or a compatible player.

The one that says, “Open Links in MPV”.

PS: Specifically created this script because for the last few months FreeTube hasn’t been at its best, so I decided I’d just use it for subscriptions and use MPV for playback.

That said, I think FreeTube has built-in MPV support in its settings, so the script is probably not needed when copying links from within FreeTube.
Outside FreeTube, though — been useful for me.

Edit: It is actually useful in FreeTube for playlists. Copy the link for a playlist, and it opens in MPV, then you get all the functions of MPV.

Really wish we had newpipe for linux.

It’s a real shame how google has managed to force the issue on age restricted vids not being watchable without an account now though, neither newpipe nor invidious can bypass it currently.

All for the surveillance state ofc.

Awesome. Never noticed settings/external player. I selected SMPlayer.
All video have the “Bad HTTP Status error” for me at the moment but clicking on icon “open in smplayer” starts the video stream in the SM Player window. According to opensnitch /usr/bin/mpv connects to one googlevideo.com address only.

Thanks for the tip!

I have this issue too for some time. I use MPV as external player now to watch videos.

I read this article before about Newpipe for Linux but it is flatpak and unofficial build.

Is this an ‘App’ defect or code manipulation on Google’s part to control content people were getting on unsubscribed. . . ‘YouTube’?

Is this the end of free-tube. . . . ?

Rich

honestly if the devs are not for keeping up with what Google is doing then it maybe. I’ve seen several reports over the same issue continually happening I just wonder how feasible it is to use Google Software to violate Google Software? Seems to me a firefox alternative would have been a better way to go but I don’t know what they do to make it work so not sure how feasible it is.

I basically use it because of the convenience of having my subs in on easy to see app without being logged into Google so they can’t spy on me even more.

It is due to changes google has made.

Stuff like this happens from time to time. The devs have already communicated they are working on it.

It is too soon to panic I think.

there are a couple cli players I use, my fave is ytfzf but that breaks sometimes. I use yt-dlp religiously as a downloader…did not now it was a player. Now I must config. Thanks for that.

you can’t view them with yt-dlp sorry for the confusion there. you can download then use something like mpv to watch. however

go into the settings and choose external player and choose a player then hit the little icon on the bottom of the thumbnail and it will load it in the player of choice. I’m using MPV myself

you can choose your player in the cli I remember that. even if you don’t, mpv is likely the default (I would think?). Thanks for clarifying,
@ thanks to both (@anon93652015) for the built-in mpv support info with freetube. did not know. I use mpv as a radio by itself sometimes its to peruse their gigantic and diverse radio selections as well

MPV quite possibly has the most features of any media player out there. Only thing is, you need to search for then enable most of them via text files, so it’s super basic out-of-the-box.

No switches to do it automatically, just docs to read and codes to copy and modify.
Kinda like installing Arch by RTFM-ing .

And yes, I know VLC also has a plethora of features. But apart from the customisable playlist view, which of course, includes sorting and searching, I can’t think of anything I’ve missed from VLC that I couldn’t enable in MPV.

There are quite a few mpv-based players that provide those bells and whistles if you prefer that.

Freetube dev just posted that it is an upstream issue.

Unfortunately, they didn’t say which upstream dependency they were referring to.

I know. I used to use Celluloid. Decided that I didn’t need it if I would be adding most of the features I want in config files anyway.
