MPV and Freetube, both have stopped working for me

Hi there!

As it says in the title, none of these applications is currently working for me. Both worked just fine yesterday. Not today, all of a sudden.

Freetube gives: Error: This video is unavailable for all the videos.

Trying to use the Youtube link with mpv in the terminal, it gives the following:

Is anyone else having this issue or is it something on my end.

mpv: 1:0.40.0-5

yt-dlp: 2025.07.21-1

PS. I use vpn if that is relevant but that has always been the case. Also on Android phone using the same vpn connection I can watch videos using Newpipe.

Probably youtube changed something, you need to check their issue tracker and wait for the next release.

That is most probably the case. For MPV and yt-dlp, I did already check. There was no issues reported as of half an hour ago. I haven’t checked Freetube though yet.

it seems to be hit or miss. I can sometimes hit it a couple of times (the mpv shorcut arrow) and the video will start playing. Then sometimes it just does nothing. I suppose it something we will have to deal with until they do another work around.

Yeah, that could be. Nothing worked this morning. Neither MPV nor FreeTube. Just got home from work and saw the thread, tried mpv briefly and it worked on three attempts.

The last yt-dlp update is from July, and I have no problem using mpv+URL or youtube-tui.

Its still hit and miss here as well. I think its just youtube and locations. He may not be in a location where they have rolled out whatever make it stop working for us in their area yet.

I think it has more to do with Youtube trying to make third party apps not compatible if not useless.

There are alternatives, but content creators will understandably go where they get views. The only ones also offering their content on the alternatives platforms are folk, who like you and I, have at least some reservations with YouTube.

The good thing about GrayJay, is you can fairly easily find if a creator has a channel on an alternative platform (Rumble, Odysee, BitChute, etc). The reality is though, the bulk of stuff is on YouTube.

GrayJay is improving, but the AUR packages need a bit of fixing up.

brand new sinister behavior for me and tried 4 vids–

NEW BEHAVIOR: select song, goes to song, throws a bunch api/ip address/not available errors then

those disappear after 5 seconds and is replaced by a hard freeze and all text gone, unplayable–

EDIT: copying a yt url from Freetube and pasting into MPV causes MPV to crash and disappear. Over and over.

Man the Alphabet Henchman have really devised–for us–a beatdown with extra emphasis on drama and pyrotechnics. It blowed up read good, to quote a Canadian named Jim McBob.
