Moving forward (dying ssd)

It won’t be here til the end of the day, but I aim to format (gpt) then give the whole disk to Endeavour in the install.

In between I will smartctl to guage health and see if i got what I paid for.

PS–I ran both your long and short tests. Twice. Both tests a say “a log will be produced in 2 minutes” or something…typed *.log in /home and in /files and could not find any evidence of the smartctl test outputs.

from man smartctl:

Note that the contents of this log is not preserved across power cycles or controller resets, but the
value of 'Error Information Log Entries' from SMART/Health Information log is.

Off to find this folder. For the halibut.

It means the result only exists in the drive controller until it is power cycled. If you want to preserve it then you have to pipe the output into a persistent log file yourself.

*^^This I actually know how to do–*thank you.

I just got to the part about “a license for Eric, my halibut”

It’s one of my favourite Monty Python sketches, but I thought it might have been a bit too off-topic

Life of Brian’s Biggus D my favorite MP sketch. Not even suitable for ‘What Are You Watching’ though. Yes, likely OT but funny.

Update: the used Crucial came via usps.

Passed all SMART tests–flying colors.

Installed Endeavour Cinnamon on it. And Openbox, but OB won’t open (no pun etc).

No time to dial this in for a while. It was an emergency but now have that ‘been there/done that’ feeling. May nuke and reinstall 1) headless with OB or I3 to come or 2) or go the KDE route although I truly believe KWallet is the antichrist.

Deepin looks ultra sexy but its origin gives me pause.

I took the KDE bus a long time ago and arrived at my destination!

Linux since 2017 personally. I never managed to arrive at that KDE destination. I think down the road.

Right now I think I’m going to skirt @dalto ‘s advice and commit to “a futile and stupid gesture and I’m just the guy for the job**” —install Endeavour wayland 10.10 Budgie warts and all with OpenBox on the side.

**Otter, Animal House

If that = down in flames then the closer I move to KDE…like it was destiny

I don’t know about open box but Budgie seemed to work fine on bare metal just not on vmware. Having issues with the cursor not showing.

that is excellent news except for the mouse…but bare metal will be where it’s headed. thank you.

It seemed to work fine on Wayland on my system with amdgpu.

Have you tried Cosmic yet?

toyed with it quickly once—it’s a great idea. It’s Gnome that you can make into a non-Gnome DE. I like that idea. Watching a video about it now.

EDIT: have a lot of KDE to uninstall including Dolphin and Krunner and no doubt Kwallet which comes with every K-program….but all in all Cosmic is not as close to Gnome as I thought it was (I like the gnome stack and underneath siuff always have) which is the real pull.

What is the wear leveling on the Crucial SSD? Is it used? Keep the number of write cycles and/or TBW somewhere. This will help you to determine the actual life remaining of the SSD.

KDE. Only KDE. Nothing apart from KDE. 5 days a week and twice on a weekend.

Yep its origin is a cause of concern.

the worse I ever saw was like 44 or 36 in two place, nothing like the grotesque output I had at the top.

It’s a popular club

not super happy after Plasma install so back in Solus.

Plasma says “hey turn panel opaque” and “turn panel translucent” and when you do CRICKETS. Stays black. See pic.

The arrow with the “hidden icons”? When I try to bring ‘alerts’ to panel it greets me with a big red strike-through (see pic) even though I marked it ‘stay enabled.’ 5 other settings did not get rid of strikethrough. Who want’s to see a panel of strikethroughs?

What’s the use of 5000 customizations if they don’t work? I get this ugly impression there are menus under menus and setting under settings and none of them are transparent to me since nothing I ask it to do works…so far.

  1. Rarely have I shirked from a Linux challenge. As most of you. I have a feeling I will start a thread asking you for help every 10 seconds until I understand this thing.
