Modifying grub installer, to fix problem

Make sure when you update the bios and set your settings to default you go back and turn off secure boot and fast boot before you start the process.

If you are going to build the partitions yourself just make sure first use gparted and create a GPT partition table which will delete existing partitions. Then create the partitions you want and use @FLVAL suggests 550 mb for the EFI partition and use mark it as /boot/efi. Create all your other partitions and then run the install. Make sure you look at the window at the bottom of the install screen as to where it is reporting it will install grub. I hope it works out for you and if it doesn’t then try @pudge suggestion as i know he had a similar issue but older hardware i think and @fernandomaroto suggestion. One of these should work because they are working in most applications.

Edit: Don’t forget the EFI partition is formatted Fat32

Hi @anon64481721 and @ricklinux,

to complete your steps :

  1. Reset BIOS to factory Defaults.
    - Not necessary, it will goes itself on default after update…
  2. Update it - Yes
  3. Start EndeavourOS
  • not yet setup correctly your bios before to start Eos usb uefi live. Check uefi mode, select your UEFI SDD and UEFI usb key for boot + like @ricklinux told turn off secure boot and fast boot
  1. Start EOS UEFI USB live
  2. Build partitions myself
  • with Gparted rebuild your head gpt partion SDD (we are agree that in doing it, you will loose all your data on your SDD)
  • now create first partition sda1 550 Mb EFI and mark it as /boot/efi with flag esp format Fat32
  • create sda2 20Gb or 30Gb partition system mark it as / format ext4
  • create sda3 rest of the disk size mark it as /home format ext4
  1. Start auto-installer.
  • yes your sdd is ready for install with Calamares
  1. build grub
  • yes as @ricklinux told you check at the bottom of the install screen from Calamares where it is reporting it will install grub and put it on sda1
  1. Tell us if your EOS is flying on ? :rocket:

Just came back home, will try everything tomorrow (hope i come back earlier), will give you updated. That seems like i used to do but i think my bios is fucked up so resetting/update will probably help. See you tomorrow !

I just read this today before I saw the topic you opened. https://forum.manjaro.org/t/howto-dual-boot-manjaro-windows-10-step-by-step/52668

Alright will use !

Hey, well i tried everything i could, correctly i think? (get me wrong it’s possible but i took care of mistakes)

How i’ve built my partitions (sorry for poor quality) :

part2

part1

how i’ve build grub (LIVE USER) :

   sudo -l umount -a
   umount -l /tmp/calamares-root-me1gz7wk
   sudo umount -l /tmp/calamares-root-me1gz7wk
   sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt
   sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p3 /mnt/home/
   sudo mount -t vfat /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/boot/efi/
   sudo genfstab -U -p /mnt/ >> sudo /mnt/etc/fstab
   sudo arch-chroot /mnt/

how i’ve build grub (ARCH-ROOT /MNT) :

    os-prober
    efibootmgr -v
    grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=grub-efi --removable
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

is that correct?

Happy to see you here @anon64481721,

I was scared that your bios update turned badly !
So good your sheme partition is perfect, the only thing I have a doubt is about SWAP, I know that it’s not recommanded by EOS to not use it on SDD that could damage it, so need to check this on M2 if it’s the same or not.

Calamares will propose You where you want to place your grub…
To make the key you have all here :
https://endeavouros.com/docs/installation/create-install-media-usb-stick/

Are you sure about ?

sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt

is not ?

sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt/

Not sure about --removanle, Pudge did it with :

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --bootloader-id=grub-efi --recheck
sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p2 /mnt

went to the right location don’t worry
still can’t install without

--removable

flag.

Don’t really know what i can do else?

About your motherboard, did you got to update it with the last BIOS version A ?
Do you see UEFI USB Key when prompt for install ? I’m wondering if you run really your USB key as UEFI !

I build the USB key with Mintstick which I could install at least 20 differents distros to test with success, always work…This USB creator is just an incredible tool. It makes the USB key from ISO in Fat16, never got problem with. In case you are interesting :

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/mintstick/

i was using balenaetcher

Have you tried just installing by creating a GPT to delete all partitions and then use erase disc with swap and let the installer do it’s thing?

I don’t know at which point you are right now !
–removable seems to not work, try to do a normal install with Calamares.

Regarding balena etcher…that’s all I use and never had an issue with it.

it was autosigned btw (the BOOTEFI) also, im at the same point than this

Do you have 2 choices on boot ? the normal mode and below the Fallback mode (initramfs) ?
If yes choose the second one to see what happens ?

exactly the same

Do you think the M.2 could be different from SDD or HDD on usage ?
Your partition sheme is good, your UEFI USB key seems to work, on install on Calamares where did you place the grub when it asked you ?

wdym on calamares?

I did directly the install from Calamares, I click INSTALL and choose where to put the grub and at the end of install, I reboot and that’s it !

you mean from the pop up (endeavour os > start installer)?
