Mendeley not opening PDFs with external viewer

Hi
This concerns Mendeley Desktop - I am trying to open up documents with the external PDF viewer (Okular, although switching the default application has no bearing on the issue) but even though the context menu offers the option for doing so, nothing happens. Nor does the context menu open the containing folder, which is a third option on the menu. The only option that does work is if the document is viewed inside Mendeley directly (a new tab opens and the PDF can be read). However, while this is usually fine, there are times when the file is better opened by an external viewer, which is now not happening.

This may (or may not) be related to me not being able to download files using Chrome or Brave browsers and I raise this because I wonder if it has anything to do with whatever language was used to develop both of these browsers and Mendeley, but I am only speculating.

If anyone can weigh in with some suggested fixes, that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi @2_Man_Fu ,
Having installed okular first
aur/mendeleydesktop-bundled 1.19.8-1
so Mendeley Desktop
Open File Externally
opens documents in My Library in Okular

google-chrome and brave are able to download this for example
Tested in Plasma and in XFCE as well.

Hi eso

Thanks for taking the time and thought to reply. I appreciate that

As it so happens, the issue appears to have been fixed via an alternate approach. The problem was seemingly connected to a wider issue where Chrome (and related browsers) were also not downloading anything.
I raised this in a different thread, and rabcor and MyNameIsRichard offered suggestions which did work. These were to install xdg-desktop-portal and xdg-desktop-portal-gtk which had not been pulled in when I did the original Mate installation.
Solving this browser issue also (magically?) solved the Mendeley issue.
However, I’m starting a list of bookmarks and will add your suggestion to that just in case the solution is short lived or something else borks.
Thanks so much for your support.
Cheers
