Folks:
Relative new user of Endeavor using MATE as the DE on a multi-boot machine. I recently discovered that my Tumbleweed install, also using MATE was not able to save screenshots, whereas from back in May in that system I have a saved screenshot. So MATE screenshot was able to work then. I posted a question about it on their forum to little fanfare, posted the issue on MATE’s github forum to similar response.
I am booted in Endeavor right now and while running pacman I saw a package being upgraded that said, “mate-xxxx” . . . slowly realizing that meant I was using MATE I tested the screenshot app in Endeavor, it “creates” the screenshot, but clicking “save” just goes to spinning beachball of non-function.
Reading through some forums posts about problems with Firefox not saving images and crashing shows something about “pixbuf” . . . but didn’t seem to provide “solutions” to the problem? From a thread 3 weeks ago it was stated, “the fix should be showing up in the repos soon” . . . ???
Any known fixes to this screenshot not saving images problem?? Or, it’s wait and see if and when upstream gets it done?? In the case of Endeavor the install is new enough that I probably haven’t needed to use mate-screenshot, to know that it was working and now not . . . . But, as of now, it is not . . . .

Thanks for the welcome and the link to what is indeed the same problem from not too long ago. I did get similar advice on the opensuse forum, other apps to use . . . which might be the ultimate solution. But, I am looking for ways to fix the MATE app, running in its own environment . . . .
What is interesting now is to see that this isn’t “new” . . . but so far nothing offered from the MATE folks on their github forum/discussion . . . ???
I have a few XFCE fronted installs . . . and on them xfce-screenshot provides a simple interface in comparison to spectacle, which appears to be more full-featured. But, still, rather than just moving on with my screenshot life w/ another player, I am hoping that mate-screenshot can be rehabilitated and return to its career with more or less full capacity . . . .
Not using Mate nyself , and if you look at the version history on their website (last version from beginning 2024 and the one before from 2021) it is fair to say it is not under heavy development, while being on a rolling distro things get updated all the time, sometimes things will fail to work because of outdated dependencies, or something like that.
Yes. It’s one of those, “the few, the proud” things as far as users of MATE go. And it does seem to be a small team that keeps it going . . . .
The thought about “rolling” distros of course is apt, rolling does hit dependency issues with some regularity. I made a note to myself yesterday, to check my Debian Sid install on another machine which I think I also am using MATE on . . . to see if it has this issue . . . . Sid’s kernel is a few iterations back from the bleeding edge . . . .
Anyway, I’ll post back with any developments as far as doubling down on trying to get mate-screenshot revived . . . if and when that might happen.

Following up on this thread . . . both of my Endeavor && TW installs have MATE 1.28.2 version, that version does not save screenshots.
My Debian Sid install on another machine with MATE has 1.26.2 and that version works. A gent on the MATE github discussion group is using a newer version of MATE 1.29 and that version has working screenshot app.
Right now in TW there is “no way to get to 1.29” via the repos . . . so in TW I needed to grab some screenshots for another problem, so I installed “xfce4-screenshooter” . . . modestly sized app, gets the job done in the DE using 1.28.2 with no path to upgrading out of it . . . .
