Did exactly this, was greeted by a wayland session, had to relogin with x11, but everything was fine afterwards. The warning via Mastodon saved my but!
Hey kde1,
why should I.
Since I installed EOS I never had another display manager than wayland and as Arch and with it EOS is changing to wayland away from x11 I don’t think I will last to long until x11 disapears in Arch.
Plasma and Gnome are not the only DE’s in town, and the others have not adapted to Wayland quite as well yet. X11 will be around for awhile, just not in the forefront. The thing about old tech, you don’t need it until you do.
Had no problems when updating and in 1,5 years no need for x11. So will not switch to x11 in EOS as since I installed it it was and is Wayland. So I will have an eye on it not to switch to x11.
Yes. If you’re using Wayland now, you’ll still be using Wayland after the upgrade. You can confirm that you’re still using Wayland by running this command:
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
Yes. Users of X11 will find after the upgrade that they are using Wayland. They can return to X11 simply by running this command and rebooting:
However, installing plasma-x11-session doesn’t automatically switch the system from Wayland to X11, but simply provides the option to switch (as it was given before). In other words, Wayland users can also install it to have the option to switch back in case of an emergency.
But it’s possible that users who previously used X11 and were now forced to switch will automatically switch back after installing the package, because the corresponding information may still be stored in the system.
