Making a bootable USB stick on MBR (only) legacy PC

Hi folks
I got an old laptop (Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Xi 2550) running Win7 and I wanted to bring it “back to life” and install my goto distro, EOS.

I have not been able to make a bootable USB stick using the EOS iso from downloads.

I recon myself a seasoned Linux user, and I’ve tried alot of different methods here, dd, Gnome USB image writer, Rufus (on a windows pc) etc etc but it just won’t boot, telling me invalid operating system or something like that.

I had to actually burn the iso on a DVD and boot from that to install EOS.

This really bugs me, how hard is it really to make an USB stick bootable with the EOS iso on a MBR only legacy BIOS system?

What is the correct, works every time 100% method, of doing this?

I understand the whole concept of MBR on the first sector of a spin disk, but gotta admit I find this a bit confusing when it comes to USB sticks etc

Any input here apresiated

Try a new usb drive maybe and see what happens or possible another usb. Most of the methods should work but for what ever reason sometimes they don’t. You’re not the only one this has ever happened to before I’m sure.

I’ve burned with dd and it has worked with all machines I’ve applied it, including old legacy BIOS machines.
So it may be a hardware issue. Try different ports or different USB drive.
And make sure the download is not corrupt.
