Local mp3s in Spotify

I’m not sure where to put this but if it’s the wrong place, please tell me or just move the thread to the correct place.

Lately I wanted to listen to a few of my friends songs that I have on mp3. Since I use Spotify for all my other music I want to play those mp3s in Spotify but I can’t get it to work.

I have enabled local files and the songs show up in local files and I can add them to a playlist (or just play them directly). But, when I try to listen to them I get a message that says something like “you can import the song, unable to play it otherwise”).

I can play the mp3s through… Is it mpv? Another music app in any case. I.e. It’s not missing codecs in the system.

I’ve tried looking for a solution on Spotify forums and have searched the Web extensively but haven’t found anything about this.

Since there are a lot of smart people here maybe anyone has any suggestions?

Not a Spotify user but looking at its PKGBUILD in AUR, it seem to need some optional packages in order to be able to play local files:

optdepends=('ffmpeg4.4: Adds support for playback of local files'
'zenity: Adds support for importing local files'
            'libnotify: Desktop notifications')

You could try installing ffmpeg4.4 and restart Spotify and see if it resolves the issue.

Yes!
That solved it.
Thanks a lot.

I have to remember to look at optional dependencies next time.
I’m slowly learning.

Glad you got it resolved!

It would be appreciated if you could mark “solution” the post pointing to it.
The forum software would then regard the topic as solved and other users with similar issue will find the solution more easily.

Of course.

I actually did it before I read this post here.
