Linux Freezing randomly with fresh installs, can't find errors

Hello, good evening.

Last days ive been trying to get into linux from windows, so i installed Pop os onto my 2nd ssd in my asus laptop with nvidia gpu and amd cpu
I often got frozen screens, sometimes i could use it for hours, sometimes it would do it immediately… unpredictable, sometimes i think its because of an app like for example discord but i dont get a consistent patern…
Then i thought it was POP os!, so i tried mint… same problem… now im using Endeavour OS
right after that sentence it froze, and it froze again after nothing was even launched, no discord nothing  i tried different linux kernels.
I had my browser throw errors like sigil or sigiv, so i tried doing a mem86 and memtester but no errors with 1 pass
i also saw with a random command i typed in:
fixing recursive fault but reboot is needed.

right now Brave browser just randomly crashed, also random…

so there is a lot going on, but even with just any clean linux install, something is off. idk if its because of my peripherals, like bluetooth mouse, usb keyboard, hdmi connected monitor
i just dont know how to troubleshoot this at all. i rlly dont want to give up on using linux as a daily driver because of my laptop, so any help would be appreciated.

2 solutions found: see ddnn solution (x11):
or solution 2 : install nvidia beta drivers. I installed nvidia-dkms-beta, after uninstalling all the conflicting packages that are shown when installing nvidia-dkms-beta, also install nvidia-utils-beta.
If you get audio problems through hdmi because of this, see for @anon93652015 solution down below about wireplumber.

Would help others to diagnose whats going on

Don’t do this EVER - if you are unsure ask and wait, better to chew up a little time than chew up heaps

The random command was a journalctl command so i didnt think it would be harmful, its for seeing logs i assumed.

Sorry for the bad formatting

Yeah, it’s all good now. No worries.

So, to confirm: you have an Asus laptop, with peripherals that include a monitor, and EndeavourOS is installed on an SSD?

As far as freezing is concerned: When was the last time you updated your BIOS?

Just noticed it.

You still have Windows installed, correct?

Indeed, I have tried using it without the monitor, and only on the laptop itself but that seemed to also freeze after a while. Currently i am surviving for 30 mins without freeze.

I have 1 ssd with windows, and another with EOS, and a partition for free space for windows.
I also use a bluetooth mouse if that matters.

My bios is up to date, there havent been any new bios updates for my system in a long time, for over 1 or 2 years.

… speaking of the devil, after i wrote freeze, this page gave me a sigiv error code, then afterwards it froze EOS ( i have had instances where i got sigiv or sigil code in a browser, and could keep using EOS without freezes )

Hmm. Okay.

So you mean SIGSEGV?

Yes 317 is the latest bios provided by the asus website.
I have windows on 1 ssd, and EOS on 2nd ssd, after a partition for windows storage.

Indeed, Sigsegv. but i dont always get that error, most of the times, the freezes happen without that appearing. but i’ve noticed sigsegv and sigil appear in browsers too, often before a freeze. This doesn’t ever happen in browsers in windows

Okay. So memory issues, KDE, Nvidia, Wayland…

Have you tried using an X11/Xorg session?

I have not heard of x11 or xorg no, nor how to use it.

Okay. That’s fine.

  • Log out, then look for something that says “Wayland” or has the KDE logo or EndeavourOS logo.
  • Click on it, then select the one that says “X11/Xorg”.
  • Finally, log back in and use your laptop like normal to see if you have any issues.

Of course, it would take a while for any issues to happen, if any, so no need to reply for a while. But let us know how it goes.

On SDDM with the default theme this should be on the bottom left

It sure seems like using X11, for now, fixed it? i am not so sure, i have been able to go with wayland for an hour too.
i had an issue where i randomyl just logged out, not sure if thats related but afterwards i tried wayland again, and it froze after 10 mins, and when back to x11… it works
i am confused why, i checked some logs from wayland with journalctl | grep -i 'wayland.*]: ’
and got this:

I read things about amd, but nothing about nvidia, maybe wayland isnt using my gpu im not sure.
I have set with optimus manager to use nvidia card for testing purposes.

So if wayland was the problem, would you know why? I heard wayland is like the … replacement for x11 and repos are even removing x11 support, do i need to configure wayland for nvidia perhaps?

This will happen at some point but I don’t see it happening this year (I could be very wrong also, there’s a reason I don’t gamble)(and to clarify this would be desktop specific, there is still a lot of things that only work onX11 )

Edit: everything was going well, i then turned on hybrid on on optimus manager… so it can switch between my dgpu and dgpu… im not sure if this caused it but when i opened a youtube video, it froze, but the audio continued.
even then, its running way longer than with wayland.
I will let update you tomorrow after using EOS the whole day, and see how it goes. If anyone knows how a nvidia user can use wayland, that would be appreciated as well  kind of scared about wayland replacing x11, like smokey said, it will happen at some point

Troubleshooting

  • Driver Updates: Ensure NVIDIA drivers are up to date.
  • Optimus Manager Settings: Check and configure Optimus manager for optimal GPU switching.
  • System Logs: Monitor logs for any specific errors or warnings that may provide insights into the freezing issue.
