I don’t know how it is today in Crete but 40 years ago I was advised not to drink tap water like in Germany but does it have to be an overpriced product?

Thanks! Tap water is fine in Crete now, very clean. But I love Perrier.
Prost!

In special nights I drink this. Too expensive to drink too much of it!

…has the Perrier gone straight to my head.

I’m surprised that Perrier hasn’t used it in a commersial, but I’m greatful that they haven’t.

I picked up a few new beers to try today; frist up is SeaQuench Ale form Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton, Maine USA.

This was a long shot, as I have never really liked any of the Dogfish Head beers that I have tried in the past, but I have heard only praise for this one.

It’s a session sour ale, with sea salt, lime juice, lime peel, and black lime added. Black limes are limes that have been dried, preferably sun-dried.

The head dissipates within seconds after it’s poured. It’s gone in less than 30 seconds.

Really, I would say it tastes like an American-style gose. It’s very refreshing, and quite drinkable. The lime characteristic is strong but not overpowering, with a nice but subtle hit of bitter lime peel. The sourness and salt are balanced nicely.

My big quibble with it is that the flavors all float about separately - they’re not integrated with each other, so each flavor exists on its own plane. That’s not a terrible thing, but for a beer with such a friendly, quaffable profile, it’s a bit odd. There’s no real depth to any of the flavors, and no interplay.

It’s a good beer, the first beer from Dogfish Head that I have enjoyed, and while it won’t be one of my go-to choices, I’d certainly buy it again.

The second new beer I’m trying tonight is Ruby Slippers Raspberry Sour Ale, from Woodland Farms Brewery (Kittery, Maine USA). It describes itself as a German-style sour raspberry wheat beer.

Since I generally like sour beers (Rodenbach, anyone?), I thought I’d give it a try.

This is one of the strangest beers I’ve ever had. I expect a certain tartness from a beer that is labeled as a sour; this is not that kind of sourness. It’s more like some wheat has deteriorated. It’s not crisp, it’s not tart, it’s not a lactobacillus sour - it’s just a flat, sour wheat flavor, with a bit of raspberry.

The aroma is particularly unpleasant.

You know those raspberry wheat beers that are designed to appeal to people who don’t usually like beer? Yeah, it’s like a batch of that went bad.

It’s not awful, but I will not be purchasing this again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. I will make some tacos tomorrow with fresh crazy-hot Scorpion peppers and drink the remaining 3 cans of this.

Ugh. That’s just depressing. I don’t particularly like any wheat beers, but you just sell it so well.

Best served at the end of the night.

It has an air of “this didn’t turn out like we expected, but we invested a lot of time and money into it so let’s just sell it anyway.”

Again, it’s not awful, but I have a hard time imagining that there are very many repeat customers on this one. It reeks of disappointment.

Is it like a seasonal thing? It can’t be a staple of whatever they sell if it’s that bad. I know sometimes the “limited” releases to see if anyone likes them can be kind of a let down.

There’s nothing printed on the can that suggests it’s a limited or seasonal release, but I haven’t investigated it any further.

I like a good weissbier or witbeer (German and Belgian styles of wheat beers), and I generally love sours, but this one is just sad.

I have had their (Woodland Farms Brewery) Choctopus Rex, a chocolate nitro stout that was good if a bit unspectacular.

A few carnitas tacos with fresh Scorpion peppers will get them down the ol’ gullet, though.

Rodenbach Grand Cru is one of my favourite ales, especially alongside a large meal, like a pizza. Aged in oak barrels, it is as red as blood and almost as sour as vinegar, but very drinkable, refreshing, and very efficient at quenching thirst. It’s been about two years since I had one, as it seems they stopped importing it to Croatia. But there was a period in my life I had one for lunch almost every single day for about two years.

I wish I could say that this will be in my glass today, but unfortunately, it won’t.

Speaking of sour ale, the best one I ever tried was De Dolle Brouwers Oerbier Special Reserva. I’ve had only two bottles of this, so far, both were gifts from a Belgian guy who owned a pub I frequented. It’s practically impossible to obtain, at least here. It’s a very delicious ale, with a fruity flavour as complex as Rochefort, but very sour (though slightly less sour than Rodenbach Grand Cru). Also, it is much stronger than Rodenbach (ABV is about 13%, IIRC).

Unfortunately, this won’t be in my glass today, either. I’ll have to settle for a Rochefort 10 :joy:

Rodenbach is a frequent guest at my home; if I had to choose only one beer to drink for the rest of my life, it would be Rodenbach.

I’ve never had the De Dolle Brouwers Oerbier Special Reserva, but I see that it is available at a fantastic local bar called Novare Res Bier Cafe, so once this COVID madness relaxes somewhat, be assured that I will be trying it :+1:.

EDIT - a correction, they have some De Dolle beers, but not the Special Reserva. Dammit.

They have the Oerbier Special Reserva? Lucky you!
