The second new beer I’m trying tonight is Ruby Slippers Raspberry Sour Ale, from Woodland Farms Brewery (Kittery, Maine USA). It describes itself as a German-style sour raspberry wheat beer.
Since I generally like sour beers (Rodenbach, anyone?), I thought I’d give it a try.
This is one of the strangest beers I’ve ever had. I expect a certain tartness from a beer that is labeled as a sour; this is not that kind of sourness. It’s more like some wheat has deteriorated. It’s not crisp, it’s not tart, it’s not a lactobacillus sour - it’s just a flat, sour wheat flavor, with a bit of raspberry.
The aroma is particularly unpleasant.
You know those raspberry wheat beers that are designed to appeal to people who don’t usually like beer? Yeah, it’s like a batch of that went bad.
It’s not awful, but I will not be purchasing this again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. I will make some tacos tomorrow with fresh crazy-hot Scorpion peppers and drink the remaining 3 cans of this.
