Laptop crashes immediately when suspending

Hello, EndeavourOS community

I’m an IT person who’s got a lot of experience with computers, but I’m relatively new to this OS and Linux in general, so I have a lot of experience troubleshooting computers, but I’m very much a noob with regards to Linux systems. I come from Manjaro, because it was heavily recommended as being a great starting point for people who want to try an Arch-based system, but it ended up not being a very pleasant experience, since I wasn’t aware that the system has a lot of trouble when you start installing more and more software from the AUR, to the point my laptop wouldn’t boot anymore some days, and would randomly fix itself somehow. Reading recommendations, I found out about EndeavourOS, so I decided to try, and I can confidently say I’m never going back. It’s been a really pleasant and smooth experience for the past few months, until very recently.

I’m experiencing a really troubling problem since I did a full system update around like 2 weeks ago now, where there’s like a 25% chance my laptop will just die when I try to suspend it. This isn’t at all like most of the things you can find searching the web, where most of the people report they experience something similar (in other distros, like Ubuntu), which is a crash when attempting to wake their computer up from sleep. What I experience happens immediately when I choose the suspend option in the menu, or close the lid (it doesn’t make any difference). What happens is that the screen turns off, and it sounds like the laptop is preparing to go to sleep, but then that never happens. It completely ceases to respond in any way, but the backlight in my keyboard stays on, and the fan keeps spinning at the usual speed when working.

I’ve followed the tutorials to activate the SysRq options (AKA “REISUB”) to try and get my laptop to reboot whenever this happens, but the laptop is dead frozen. I know the REISUB thing works, because in any other context, it successfully reboots my laptop. However, nothing but a hard poweroff fixes it when it gets to the point I’m describing. I don’t want my system or my drives to get corrupted by having to power it off like this repeatedly, but there’s not much I can do if the laptop just keeps freezing in this state.

I need to clarify that I’m using the KDE Plasma 5.26.4 desktop, with its default window manager (KWin). I’m using the latest kernel (6.1.1-arch1-1 at the time of writing), and I can’t use the LTS kernel, because some applications I use require a kernel version newer than 5.17, so I can’t really check if it’s something to do with the latest kernel specifically (I’m not sure if it’ll break something important, since I’m a noob, so I don’t want to risk it). I’ve read that similar issues are related to Nvidia chips, and my laptop indeed does have an Nvidia GPU. Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti Mobile, to be precise. It’s one of those switchable GPUs that operate interchangeably with an Intel graphics chip, with the Optimus driver or however you call it. And yes, I know about what Linus Torvalds has said about Nvidia lol.

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the GPU driver with the nvidia-inst utility, but it’s made no difference. Other power options work normally, and I don’t have hibernate enabled before anyone asks. I’m pasting my inxi -Fazy below:

What follows is a log of one time I tried to close the lid, to see if journalctl had any valuable information. Alas, it just suddenly stops with no real indication of what’s causing it, and the “Boot” line you see at the bottom is the boot sequence after a hard power off:

So, I’m pretty stumped. I don’t know what to do to stop this, or how to predict when will it happen. Has anyone experienced something like this, or has some idea on what’s specifically causing this?

You may start from the watchdogs.

You may install linux-lts for troubleshooting reasons. Try to boot into it and test if you can suspend successfully. (don’t use your programs in question… :person_shrugging: )

Also, consider adding ibt=off in kernel parameters, for testing suspension.

Another place to look for a change is the BIOS (hardware side), looking for DPMS (or other similar for the sleep mode), changing to another sleep mode. This may be possible also on the system settings (software side). Try one at a time.

Okay, so… watchdogs was and has always been off, apparently.

I’m not sure changing ibt is going to make a difference, considering I don’t have any of the symptoms related to it. I don’t have any slowdowns while booting, nor does it ever lock up at all. I’ll probably try it out later on, since right now, I’m going to try and see if running the LTS kernel makes a difference.

I’ll report back if there are changes.

Alright… I’ve been running the LTS kernel for a couple days already, and I haven’t experienced issues with suspending so far. I won’t say it’s solved for sure just now, but it’s pretty much looking like something broke really badly in the most recent kernel update.

Guess that’s to be expected from a rolling release distro. My only problem now is that I can’t use the Asus Control Center anymore, but I guess I can live without it for a while.

I’ll say this is solved right now, but I’ll come back and update the thread if I run into an issue.
