Laptop 2nd monitor not recognized

I’ve had good luck with Nvidia cards on both my laptop and my son’s laptop (mine is a 960 and his a 1660 which use the same driver) until now. Both run Cinnamon EndeavorOS and were installed a few years ago with Windows dual boot as well. I have always used 3 external monitors plus the laptop monitor. They recognized immediately using the proprietary Nvidia install. He has never wanted to use an external until now and it worked perfectly with proprietary install. He asked if he could use a spare monitor of mine yesterday that I used perfectly on a non-Nvidia laptop running Endevour Budgie. I first installed the new monitor in Windows and everything was fine, so I know the connection and cable (HDMI) are fine. I booted into Linux, and I can’t even recognize the external monitor. The laptop monitor is still OK, so luckily there is time. Any advice would be great.

Optimus laptops often have similar issues, depending on Vendor and Model, because external ports are usually connected to the dGPU.
So, HW/SW info is important to start an assessment.
Read this and send at least the inxi part and Xorg.0.log.
Also check if there is more than one Xorg log in /var/log/, excluding .old ones for now.

How did you install nvidia drivers?
It seems it is not compiled properly, or broken package/installation.
Re-install the nvidia driver and/or upgrade your systems’ packages.

Originally installed via EndeavorOS Nvidia proprietary install. Obviously, reinstalled many times (every time it updated in Pacman or reinstalled with kernel over 2 years). All packages are up to date, and I reinstalled Nvidia this morning. Still not recognizing. He is heading to school (needs laptop), so I will check back late this afternoon.

Not sure this will help as I’m a KDE user , but in KDE to get TV working through HDMI , I have to go into system settings , Display and Monitor . There I see the TV and need to enable it , for it to work . This may apply also with the Bugie Desktop , not sure though . Just a thought !
GOOD LUCK …

I understand, but the error messages show the driver modules fail to load and report about something not correct in driver version/compilation.
The quick fix for production is to uninstall nvidia proprietary and use nouveau instead.
As said, external monitor outputs are probably connected to nvidia, that’s why the result of not recognized monitors.

I hope someone else may know more about the invalid :elf: message and can help troubleshoot :person_shrugging:

I think you misread the issue. The monitor was fine in Budgie, but that was with integrated graphics. I have done all of the settings stuff before in Cinnamon on my daily. The issue with the problematic machine is that the monitor is no detected to be configured.

I will give that a read, Thanks,

I thought about installing Nouveau instead of Nvidia, but like you said was hoping someone had a solution for the proprietary install.

Reading it now. Will read again once the machine is in front of me.

By no reason at all, it is detecting the 2nd monitor and configuring fine. I had tried using nvidia dkms wtih it still not recognizing the monitor. When I got on the machine for the first time this afternoon, there was an update in pacman for nvidia dkms. Took the update, and after reboot checked the display setting and the 2nd monitor was recognized. Activated and configured perfectly. Happy accident is fine by me.
