šŸ’ Kudos to LineageOS devs

I’ve got this Samsang Galaxy Tab 6 Lite that I bought some time after its release in 2020. The stock Android delivered by Samsung got immediately replaced after unboxing and unlocking the bootloader.

If I had stayed with Samsung, I would be on Android 13 and EOL when it comes to OS. Just two days ago, it was announced the release of LineageOS 23.0, Android 16.

My device being luckily ā€œeligibleā€ for this upgrade, it is now on Android 16/LineageOS 23.0. I’m so grateful for all the work that must have gone into this release considering all the obstacles to overcome because of Google’s latest change of policy regarding AOSP.

So kudos to LineageOS!

I remember using cyanogenmod on my s1 and lineageos on my s4, got a lot of extra life out of them.

I’ve got a Pixel 4a running stock. I’m going to install GrapheneOS to finally de-Google my life.

It won’t do much good, as my wife happily uses both MS and Apple products. Guilt by association and all that.

Nice, never tried graphene but hope to one day.

I am not sure if GOS folks recommend this device anymore. It has been getting ā€œextended support releaseā€ but none since 20250127.

You can check here: https://grapheneos.org/releases#sunfish

And here: https://grapheneos.org/faq#device-support

I do have a Pixel 4a (Sunfish) too but I have switched it to LineageOS as well. It currently runs LinneageOS 22.2 (Android 15). It receives weekly (!!) builds of the OS but I don’t have to install them every week. The latest is from Oct. 9th and has Android security updates from September 2025.

I am very pleased with how it runs and it still has great battery life. I do hope that they will release LOS 23 for this device too.

You are one of the lucky few. More than 90% of all the devices on the market are not supported by any third party OS like yours.

Tech Twins wonder power, ACTIVATE!

Thanks for the OS info! Hmm, just have to convince my CFO that a Pixel 8a should be in the budget. Let’s see, Xmas is around the corner…

In the meantime, I’ll give LineageOS a shot as a stopgap measure. Maybe we won’t need the $500 investment after all. I strongly dislike getting rid of a consumer good just because it’s not this year’s model; I’d rather push the MTBF boundaries.

Besides, for me smartphones are fine for reading books but not creating content, which is what I mostly do. No way I’m typing out a user manual on a phone.

Just take into consideration that LineageOS, out of the box has no support for services dependend on Google Play Services. You could flash GAPPS (https://wiki.lineageos.org/gapps/) but that is not supported by LOS.

So keep that in mind if you are dependent on push notifications and other things needing google play services.

I don’t use mine as my daily driver so I am fine with it (I’m fine with no push notifications as well). It is mostly used for listening to podcasts, online radios, occasional YT videos and the like.

By the way is yours 4a or 4a 5G? They are both supported by LOS. But 4a 5G is already on Android 16 / LOS 23.
