Krita 6.0 Released

  • Krita 5.2.16-1 has been flagged as out-of-date.
  • Krita 6.0.0-1 is in Extra-Testing

It’s always good to see open-source creative tools continue to advance :purple_heart:

@UncleSpellbinder Do you use Krita much?

I use both Krita and GIMP a lot.

This is good to know, I like Krita and is pretty much my art software of choice, especially the new min and max speed of stabiliser options when using a drawing with a pen and tablet.

David Revoy also has a list of the features and shows them, it seems the text tools have been improved a lot such as modifying each letter and become a very powerful tool. Keep in mind his list of 10 favourite is from a perspective of making comics so his order of what is the best is in line with that and isn’t every new feature.

For those who don’t know David Revoy is someone who switched to Linux and open source software for Art starting from 2009 after getting irritated by proprietary licenses, and was sponsored by Krita for version 4.0, he also has many brush packs he shares on Krita forums too, as well as finding at least 200 bugs in Krita and mentioning new featured to add.

I really need to knuckle down and do something in Krita, I installed it about a year ago, but never have used it, I need to get my feet wet.

It’s out of Extra-Testing and available in Extra!

According to the official blog post, Krita 6 is experimental and not recommended for serious work as yet. Why in the flying f–k did the Arch maintainer not use 5.3 as recommended?

Rhetorical question. Just a bit annoyed because I had trouble with 6.0 AppImage. And I normally use both the AppImage and the Arch version for checking issues.

Was about to update and noticed it, which is why I’m just now commenting.

Yeah, I was wondering about the whole “experimental, not ready for daily use” warning as well.

When you start Krita 6, it clearly says DEV BUILD with an exclamation point. Clicking DEV BUILD takes you to a “triaging bugs” page.

Luckily, Krita 5.3 is available as a Flatpak.

Nah. I’ll just use the 5.3 AppImage as the AppImage is quite literally what the Krita devs have been recommending for a few years now.

When they say 6.0 is now stable, then I’ll switch to it for both the AppImage and the Arch version. It’s the same app; 5.3 just works and doesn’t take 20 minutes to launch.

100% accurate. Sometimes 6.0 takes a minute or more to open. And I’ve had several crashes. So far, the 5.3 Flatpak is working perfectly.

EDIT:

Uninstalled the Flatpak and installed the Appimage using AppimageLauncher. Now I just need to figure out how to get the app icon’s image to Yet Another Monochrome Icon Set.

For those who’d like to hold it back, there’s also the option to:

sudo downgrade krita

Found it. A simple edit of the app was all it took.

Yeah, people who need to can do this. But the only reason to do this (apart from bugs and launch speed) is because the AppImage doesn’t consistently allow you to use your default XDG dialog, defaulting to a more generic QT-based dialog instead.
