Konsole vs leading edge terminals

From what I can gather, if you use the terminal a ton with work that outputs a metric ton of text at once, it does help out. If you want to use more complex applications inside terminals, like for example file managers with a preview pane that shows what that file is, it helps since it can display images and videos using better hardware than your CPU has.

They aren’t necessary, though, like at all, IMHO.

From the Ghostty Docs site :

I know many don’t believe that speed is that important for a terminal emulator, but new users to Ghostty repeatedly told me that they were very surprised how noticeable the speed improvements were to their everyday use. I hope you’ll feel the same way.

I’ve seen the same thing with zsh startup, some people are able to notice how fast/slow it is.

Yes, but they don’t release because they’re not completely compliant with Wayland.

Perhaps for those who want their terminals to play cartoons without tearing, the GPU acceleration is vital.

They seem to be at least working on it…

I don’t doubt that it is fast, and that people notice slow. But what’s the baseline, and what is that particular task? Personally I haven’t seen a convincing example for “everyday tasks” or something substantial above the “trust me bro”-benchmark. That forms my current opinion that GPU acceleration is maybe nice, but not something that would influence my choice.

I’m sorry, but to me that just sounds like “trust me bro, it’s faster”. I have no doubts it will be faster, but at the same time, I don’t believe it will be fast enough. I personally believe that most people, including quite a few developers and sysadmins, probably don’t rice their setups as much as other people do, so a GPU accelerated terminal emulator being faster for certain complex setups probably doesn’t really add up.

I agree with @Schlaefer, for someone who uses their terminal for text things, I don’t really see much advantage in a GPU accelerated terminal. I have not seen any noticeable performance difference in using a GPU accelerated terminal. I have also never thought “I wish this terminal would consume less CPU”.

I played with kitty quite a bit and while it does meet my needs, in the end, after a lot of tinkering, I had a terminal that was about the same as konsole for my use case. It was just a lot more work to get it that way.

That’s how I feel about ricing in general: a lot of effort to get somewhere that is similar to something near what would be decent looking and/or decently working out of the defaults whatever I use comes with, all for 10 times the effort! No, thank you.

The only case I’ve read somewhere, was scrolling between two split view on a big HD screen was smoother with GPU acceleration.

I didn’t choose Ghostty for the GPU thing, but it’s surprising to find so much projects using it, Alacritty, Kitty, Wezterm or Rio, the trust me bro effect is strong.
